Guardian Stone

Guardian Stones are set up at corners of the lands of some lords, just like oak trees mark their borders. The Guardian Stones mainly protect the lands from storms coming from the sea, and are hugely appreciated. They usually come from a mine on one of the Northern islands - tales say that the islands has not been hit by a serious storm in centuries.
As you can see, the lineart underwent a lot of changes with the tree. As is usual when one discovers a new technique, one tends to overdo it at first. When it came to balancing out colors with the lineart later down the line, I suddenly realized that the treetrunk feels way too heavy like this. It felt a bit weird to erase all that effort again, but it was worth it. There is also something a bit new about the coloring. As told in my last post, I wanted to focus more on the actual drawing instead of coloring everything into hundreds of color, essentially turning the piece more into actual comic art. Which is why this piece got a new process of shadows and lighting, focusing both of these onto a layer each instead of painting it in. The challenge then lies in choosing the right base color, that you could imagine as the color of things on a really cloudy day where there are almost no shadows visible.
I'll have to adapt a bit to this new process, for example painting in shadows that aren't caused by sunlight beforehand, but it's a lot of fun! It is also way faster, the whole piece took only 8 hours to complete, and that is with drawing and then erasing the treetrunk.
