That punishment was actually delivered to a King'sguard who secretly married a few decades before this point in the timeline. Also, a King's guard appointment is for life. There's not mechanism for a King'sguard to quit, and until Joffrey fired Barristan Selmy, members of the King'sguard were never fired. If they broke the rules the punishment was either torture, gelding and being sent to the wall, or death. I'm not defending Criston at all, but that's the context with which we must understand both his proposal and Rhaenyra's rejection of it.

Hand gave a signal to Harwin during the fight to bring Rhaenyra to safety. That's why he went and picked her up. Hand has two sons. Harwin and that guy with clubfoot who told Alicent about the tea Maester gave Rhaenyra. His name is Larys Strong. He isn't working for Otto. He is working for himself. A combination of Little Finger and Varys.

He wanted Rhaenyra to give up her position and leave with him so that he can restore his honour. When that plan failed he snapped. He felt it's not worth living without honour. So he snapped and killed Joffrey because he knew Joffrey knows the truth. And planned to end his own life because he was afraid of being tortured. He wanted a quick death.
