There are actually quite a few "torture devices" from bygone eras that may not actually have been used for torture. Another prominent one is the "iron maiden" - a person-shaped cabinet filled with spikes on the inside. Most sources agree that these weren't invented until much later, and would in most cases would never have been used. But - just like the Pear of Anguish - they really capture the imagination with how horrible they are!
