The Union Carbide Gas Leak

While looking for stock footage to accompany this video, I came across this. It's a training film made by Union Carbide (for use in their American plants) about the importance of correctly labelling chemicals. And it's narrated by none other than Leonard Nimoy - AKA Spock from Star Trek.

Safety videos like this were - once upon a time - relatively common. And big companies would often look for a famous face to present their internal safety training materials.

It's a rather surreal and (given what happened just a few years later) ironic thing to watch. It appears that, while Union Carbide definitely cared about safety in their US plants, they (or their subsidiary companies) weren't as concerned with what happened abroad.

Comments

The idea of it is terrifying - an odourless, colourless, invisible gas that could be anywhere. Difficult to run from, and you wouldn't know that you were caught up in it until it was too late. Really terrifying stuff!

Fascinating Horror

Disasters that involves gas leaking scare me the most because you're defenceless if you can't see what's coming. That training film sparked anger in me more than I think. No equal treatment and no justice in this!

Milo OJ

Agreed - more than any other disaster I've covered this seems to be one where the company behind it were just able to wash their hands of the whole thing after a certain point.

Fascinating Horror

It still astounds me how they were able to walk away and just leave their β€œmess” behind! Huge injustice!
