The Sinking of the SS Poseidon

It's always fun watching a classic disaster movie... and I've been wanting an excuse to rewatch The Poseidon Adventure for a while now. It's part of a rash of excellent disaster films from the 1970s. If you enjoy this, I'd also highly recommend The Towering Inferno (1974).

A fun bit of trivia that I came across while doing some background reading: the film is based on a novel written by Paul Gallico... who was inspired after being on board a ship when it was hit by a freak wave that sent passengers and furniture tumbling across the room.

That same ship (the Queen Mary, which was actually used to film some of the pre-capsize scenes in the movie) was also hit by a freak wave during World War II. Fully loaded with troops and equipment, it listed so badly on that occasion that it came within inches of capsizing for real!

An enjoyable rabbit hole to be going down, I hope! The Towering Inferno is on my to-(re)watch list now, just as soon as I can find a copy of it. I love it. Totally unrealistic, of course - fire is never normally that narratively satisfying!

Excellent! Happy April Fool's Day!

You send me down the rabbit hole after this...streamed *The Poseidon Adventure*, which I hadn't viewed in 40+ years. When I was a kid, it was the height of cinematic art. LOL! (I still insist Shelley Winters is a national treasure.) Unfortunately my viewing by VPN of *The Towering Inferno* cut out halfway through when ITV must have figured out I wasn't really in GB. (Currently it is not available to rent in the US.) The non-realistic portrayal of fire in that movie is hilarious. I so enjoy your April Fools entries.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I 100% fell for this until the last 30 seconds… absolute facepalm moment 😂
