I understand what you’re saying, however we can say how people should behave but the reality is people are going to do what they want to do unless the law gets involved. I personally think it is easier in the long run for Emmett to adjust to other people in situations like this otherwise he will be upset everywhere he goes because a lot of people are impatient. It’s an impatient world that everyone has to navigate. It would be nice if everyone was accommodating but they aren’t. You can call it ableist but you can’t force people to be more patient or polite or understanding. My point is people with disabilities like Emmett can’t ask for autonomy and then get upset when the world treats them like everybody else. If Emmett is asking to do things his way then he has to deal with the consequences of other people being rude or impatient. And I think that is what he was trying to teach Bay as well. Her way would make it easier but he isn’t asking for things to be easier. He’s asking to do this his way and he’s willing to deal with the consequences because he’ll be making his own decision. He’s not asking for the food stand guy to give him special treatment.

He is teaching Bay how to be in a relationship with a Deaf person, and yes he could go about this better a lot of times and be easier on her, but he is 100% justified in feeling upset at those situations where she spoke for him, and the speech he gave to her about it was beautifully said. The reason why it was okay to ask Daphne to interpret for him in order to give that speech to Bay and not okay when Bay intervened with the guy selling tamales, is that Bay was speaking FOR him, not interpreting what HE wanted to say. People with disabilities are entitled to personal autonomy just like everyone else, and yes that does mean that that man needed to take an additional 10 seconds to figure out he had to point to the 2 sauces so Emmett could choose one. So he’s in a rush and gets annoyed, or someone behind them in line does, oh well- they’ll deal. To believe that people with disabilities aren’t entitled to the same level of autonomy and need to figure out how to somehow overcome their disability in order to get by in the world, rather than inconvenience other non disabled people is an ableist perspective. Could you imagine suggesting that buildings shouldn’t have handicap accessible ramps because it enables non disabled people to be lazy and get less exercise by not having to use stairs? That instead someone in a wheelchair should just let whoever’s with him carry him in as to not infringe upon what’s in the best interest of the non disabled people? People need to learn to be accommodating of differently abled people - point blank period!
