Edit: I don’t think that this will come up in such detail in my comic so here is Thomas’ backstory to answer any questions you might have!
Thomas comes from a broken home. His mother was an infernal and his father was a human, they were together before the two could legally marry. The relationship was rocky at best, his father was abusive and when Thomas was very little his mother left. She tried to take him with her, but this legal system does favor humans. Thomas’ father was possessive and when his mother managed to get away he did the only thing the abuser can do at that point which was ruin her reputation - mostly to little Thomas. Any pride he might have felt in being half infernal was picked apart by his father’s opinion of his mother - even though the comments were never directed at him it took a toll. Thomas has been omitting the truth about his mother since he was a child, so when he met Mansa at 18 he never shared that aspect of his life out of habit. Recently though he’s started losing control of any magic he inherited, and is looking for anyone to help him control it. Thomas is mostly hiding this part of himself out of fear of abandonment. That is the biggest motivator to “pass” as human. His father hated infernals so much that he was worried showing what he was would lead to rejection from the last parent he had left. If he can become a judge it will make him more respectable in his mind, he’s just constantly searching for something big enough to hide behind. Judges have historically only been human so he’s worried he will lose everything if they learn the truth. It is very uncommon for even full infernals have access to any kind of magic without training. It usually lies completely dormant if untrained, so Thomas is in a very unusual situation due to a very powerfully mommy.

Her glowing green eyes are just beautiful ❤️ Doesn’t little Algie look so sweet as a baby? I grieve for him here because this is before he knows to see infernals with the prejudices of the adults around him. Here, before all that, he has his innocence and his mother’s love. I don’t know if they’ll ever be reunited, can hope though that doesn’t always work out. I hope at least that over time he mellows and has more inf friends ❤️

Whitely, the texture of your story has deepened significantly with this reveal. I could see judicial situations arising in the future, as well as Mansa helping Thomas find acceptance of his own heritage.
