And it’s been established that relationships between infernals and humans carries a stigma similar to how mixed race/mixed social status (how much money/influence you have)/queer relationships are viewed by our world, so there’s that subtext (or not so subtext) as well.

IF he accepted it as such and answered back in the same tone. If they're really his friends, they could say those things and he could make some snarky comments back and the conversation would move on. If they know that he won't answer back, that he'll feel intimidated and try to justify himself instead of telling them to go jump, then he's the butt of the group and they're not his friends.
