Extra #2 - Iced

Greetings, faithful Lore supporters!

It's another "off Monday", and while that means no new Lore in your podcast feed, you are one of the luck few who get to listen to a brand new, fully-produced Lore Extra. It's going to be a hot day today in my neighborhood, but I think this episode will keep you nice and cool.

And as always, thanks for your amazing and generous support!

This episode was very well done, definitely one of your best. I'm biast, though: short stories are my favorite genre. They tend to make the one subject chosen the sole focus to the point where there's not only a filling but a fulfillment - as if a cup is never drained. It also gives the author the opportunity to be succinct and from there present vast tracks of meaning. Or, like you did here, to add on or have the evidence "driven home," as it were. Thank you.

I saw an episode of Nova about the examination of the mummy. Cool story and fascinating science! -- http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/iceman-murder-mystery.html

I can't believe you missed an ample opportunity to call this episode The Iceman Cometh- that being said, wonderful and spooky! I've never heard of the Otzi case before, now Im curious to look up the mummy for myself

I always found the Oatsy case fascinating, mostly because there is something so inherently creepy about finding a dead body that is so old and so well-preserved that it almost feels like a lie. The fact that so many people close to the expedition died could be coincidence...but it's interesting to wonder if it wasn't.

Looks like you're right about something nasty being attached to his body - a particularly virulent strain of H. pylori bacteria: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/iceman-tells-new-tale-infection-ulcer-causing-bacteria

I was thinking, if there really is a curse, why would Oatsy care about where his body is after 3000 years. I mean, he wasn't buried, he lay where he fell. Which makes me think that maybe there's something nasty attached to his body, maybe that something nasty was the reason he was hunted and killed.

Sean Butler

wonderful, wonderful show! Thank you for creating this.

Scullstreet Sal

Brilliant job, Aaron, you never fail to deliver. This is one of my favorite stories, and you managed to research and reveal even more about it than I'd ever read before. Thank you!

That is just insane. What a cool/freaky tidbit. I remember hearing the story, but the details are absolutely astounding. Thanks Aaron!

Mark Van Vrancken

I have heard of the Iceman story before, but I had no idea of what happened to the scientists and people involved. This is so spooky, I love it ! Thanks Aaron.
