Part of the reason why the kid was acting up is that they weren't communicating and the mother hadn't moved on from and was avoiding the topic of the father's death. She was suppressing and ignoring the trauma rather than address it. At the end they are happier because the addressed these things and were doing things to move past it e.g. comfortable talking about the death of her husband and how they can celebrate the son's birthday now. The Babadook will always be there but it's how you address or do things to help keep in control of it.
