Yep, Puritans were Christians. They took communion just like most others. They just protested the act of kneeling during communion. And nicknames have always been around. If the folklore passed down says "Debby Griffen", I just assume her name was Debra or Deborah. To anyone who had heard the story before, though, she'll always be "Debby", so I stuck with that.
