Ask us anything!

We're putting together a bonus Behind The Scenes episode, and we want to know what you want to know. This bonus episode will be with Night Vale creators/writers Joseph Fink & Jeffrey Cranor, composer/producer Disparition (Jon Bernstein), and the voice of Deb/tour manager/live emcee Meg Bashwiner.

Meg can tell you all kinds of stories about touring around the world. Jon has been creating the music & sound for our show for the past 3 years. And of course Joseph & Jeffrey type a bunch of words twice a month. Let us know what you'd like to know & we'll answer your questions in an upcoming Patreon bonus episode!

What's the news on the tv adaptation? I'd love to hear any casting ideas or suggestions.

Can I make a podcast reading your books??

Micah Reed

oooh and I really wanna know how dana is. is she doing well? is she happy?

dyls 💖

They do have a trans character voiced by a trans person. Sheriff Sam is explicitly non-binary. That being said, as a fellow transman, it would be nice to see more.

Does anyone in Night Vale just...not listen to Night Vale Community Radio? Or is it a requirement of some sort? Are there subversives who refuse? Or has it really been illegal to listen this whole time, so that the subversives are the listeners?

Perry F. Bruns

Also this has been on my mind forever, Lee Marvin says he’s never been to space, but in Space Race he’s with Neil on the moon. Is that one of those things that was just forgotten, or part of something weirder? Or am I just asking stupid questions :p

Si !!

Have you ever felt like you’ve written yourself into a corner? Night vale has a lot of strings to pull at, that surely they are sometimes missed. I particularly am thinking of when it’s said in History Week that night vale hasn’t had a mayor for years. Pamela and Dana obviously had to be removed as mayor before that happened, how easy/hard was that to work into the plot?

Si !!

Jeffery - you helped to introduce the world to Cecil Baldwin through a horror podcast and now Cecil Baldwin, Star of Welcome to Night Vale, co-stars a podcast where he helps you, a horror-adverse cinema fan, dip your toe into the world of horror cinema. What the hell is going on over there?

Patrick

Joseph - I'm not sure to what to ask you. I thought I would know when the opportunity arose but I feel like anyone following your work has learned a lot about.. well, a certain side of you. What's something that makes you who you are that we wouldn't necessarily pick up from your public works?

Patrick

Meg, I had a difficult time taking my family of three to Disney World, what was it like learning to take this spooky-cool circus around the world and back? [and/or] If you had to pick the top three milestones that made you the tour manager you are today.. ?

Patrick

Jon - Nightvale has such an iconic sound track and yet the audio language is obviously evolving over time. How do you approach the challenge of keeping the soundscape fresh over such a long project without losing that signature Nightvale vibe? Also, if I may - what's something we, the audience, might not understand or tend to overlook about your contribution to our favorite little creepshow? Thanks for sharing your amazing talent with us!

Patrick

whats the faceless old womans biggest fear? she seems so fearless, but is she?

Eloise White

I'd like to know what the turnaround time is on an episode, ie from the idea, through writing, recording, editing and releasing it, how long does that take?

Tom Davies

Two questions! One - would you consider doing episode prints for past favorite episodes? Sandstorm, Old Oak Doors, Who's a Good Boy, Toast, and the Alpha-Echo series would be great choices, I think! Two: Did you keep up on fan theories/speculation in the early days of the series? I started listening within the first few episodes, and I always loved reading these theories. If so, what was your favorite?

Worm

To me, since the "Night Vale, USA" episode, the story seems to have shifted a bit from macroplots toward microplots and anthology-like stories: was this shift intentional? Or did it just kinda happen? (Just for the record since text doesn't capture tone and such, I absolutely love the show and ya'll very much. I ask this as as someone who's really interesting in how storytelling happens, so am curious about The Process.)

SavvyC

what’s up with cecil’s mum?? like I just want to know more abt her in general

dyls 💖

Hey all, just want to add that Meg was there from the very start of Night Vale, when I read her these weird paragraphs I was writing and asked her what she thought. So if you want her perspective on any part of Night Vale's history, she'd also be able to address that. - Joseph

Welcome to Night Vale

I've loved some of the illustrations that've been made for the more recent episodes(bought some too). Is there an older episode you think would be good fodder for an illustration? Besides Episode 2 Glow Cloud(All Hail).

Doni Payne

I personally would like to know which voice actor was the most pleasurable to work with. I am not caught up on the show by any means, but I know the show is bigger than I thought lmao. Greetings from Idaho's B-Town (':

Leah Wilcox

I really want to know more about Huntokar(sp?). How you dreamed her up, whether you drew on myth and, I suppose, does she come from a certain kind of a mood? A way of looking at the world that sort of blends in and out of you lives? I loved her parts so much. The way they made me feel stuck with me for ages. Do these questions make sense? Anyway, anything you can tell me about how she came to be would be so great. Thanks.

Blake Harvey

How do you avoid seasonal decay of plot over the years? WTNV has been consistently good for so long, how do you manage to do that without plotlines getting repetitive?

Nash B.

What idea has made you laugh the most?

Elspeth Olson

Do you have an actual, detailed account of Cecil's personal history, or is it more fun, as writers, to discover things about his past along with the audience? Are there planned out secrets about his past we will all eventually learn, or do you decide on the specifics when they come up?

Julia Diem

Do y'all write the ads / word from our sponsor bits and just apply a company name that you think fits? Have any companies asked to be featured in that section and you don't know if they really know what they're asking for?

Ayra Tanner

I say this as a transman who listened to nightvale before transition and still do, I’m surrounded by trans and non binary people, who are explicitly so in expression voice and words. Shapeshifters and robots and aliens are the only trans rep around, with how the show uplifts black voices, where are the trans black voices? With lead characters who are queer, how do they not know a single trans person? It makes nightvale feel like it’s somewhere ... else? In a bad way.

Hart!

Which episode(s) has been the hardest to go from initial idea to finished product?

Paul Hawkins

^^^

cecil

What do you think has kept you from putting an explicitly trans* character in your shows?

Hart!

If you could go back in time and change one thing what would it be? (Doesn’t have to be podcast related lol)

Please Help me studios

Do you do some kind of background research on any religious references you have, and what kind? Does Meg have something she carries around or does during/before/after tours that could be considered a ritual for good tour or something on those grounds? (like carry a lucky cabbage or something)

Essi Mäkelä

For Disparition (Jon): what music and artists have influenced your musical career? One of the marvelous moments of seeing a Night Vale Live show was the realization that you ARE Dispariton. Love your work on and off the show.

Bill Teeple

How is khoshekh?

Ansi Lunar

On one of the streamed shows it was brought up that you had dinner on tour in a restaurant that used to be a mortuary. Where was that? I wanna eat there.

Cuddles da Vampire

What episodes did you find the most and least interesting to write?

Ruth Grahame

How long does each episode take, on average, and how is that time broken up into different tasks?

Ruth Grahame

Do you have any good stories from Prague?

hungry_aki

As a small business owner, I'm really oddly curious as to your operating costs.

Amanda Stoner

Which episodes took the least and most amount of time to write?

Pallas Gutierrez

do you have any tips for starting your own podcast in terms of getting it out there or any creative tips that might help a beginner podcaster?

cecil

I’ll apologize if this has been asked before in one of the hangouts, but... Do you ever anticipate a Hyrem returns episode with the loss of part of himself?

Rich Maes

what are your plans for ending welcome to night vale? have you planned out an ending to use in the future or will you continue to work on it until you can’t anymore?

cecil

I keep meaning to ask this on the Zoom events, but would you all mind sharing who your literary inspirations/heroes are?

H.J.

Is Cecil joining the next tour once things reopen? Or was his last tour cut with COVID?

Brendan Barry
