Alice In Borderland Episode 7

The actress who plays Kuina isn’t trans irl, only her character

This is one of my fav eps too 🥰 sooo good. And I totally forgot Kuina was trans. My mind was blown the first time I seen this cuz I thought they were showing baldy's backstory until young Kuina started putting on makeup. I was like "NO WAY!" Also, this was a VERY brave thing for the writers to put in, because LGBT stuff is heavily regulated in Japanese media. Either you have to tag it for adult audiences only which means it never shows on TV and you have to go to specialty places to buy it (like an anime con since most BL/GL can be found there) and basically don't make a lot of money. Or, you can sneak it into regular shows like this, but you have to be super sneaky about it and have queer-coded characters who never outright appear LGBT (Characters like Roswaal from re:zero who's the stereotypical Japanese gay but yet is shown to like women in the show, or like Hisoka from HunterxHunter, who is married to Killua's brother but it's never mentioned in the anime, and in fact, you only see his slight attraction to the female spider chick. Hisoka I believe was said to be canonically bi but you don't see him being attracted to men at all. The only real attraction he has is with the potential of dying in battle, which just looks like him being a creep towards Gon lol) Because of the queer-coding, a lot of foreign viewers have a hard time telling if something is supposed to be hinted BL, or if it's just bromance, and it upsets a lot of people, yet nobody is upset that it's this way because the Japanese government cracks down so hard on LGBT being shown in media. I think it's getting a little better, but you'll notice most shows that brave the BL/GL barriers are only shown on Netflix and Amazon and, well.. used to be Funimation, but Crunchyroll bought them so now they have a wider library of LGBT stuff. Anyway, this show took a big leap to have a trans character, which is considered worse than just gay even in our own country, the US. Now even Itaewon class and Squid Games did it. HUGE leaps so it's amazing to see.

I've seen this show a million times but I remember how it feels like to not know who is who hahahaha

i believe that the tattoo sword guy was a hikikomori in the real world, basically an extreme social outsider. its quite a prolific societal issue in japan (and other countries as well tbh). hikikomoris dont leave their houses, often dont even leave their rooms, they dont work, dont go to school or uni. they isolate themselves not only from the outsiders, but also from their families/roommates. there's even support groups for parents of hikikomories

Hatter did mention that the locks on the doors were broken with super glue, but when the militants took Arisu they said take him to "that" room which meant they must have left one room with a functional lock for certain purposes.
