Souls who were unable to pay risked wandering along the shores of the river for a hundred years. The coins placed on the eyes were meant for the deceased to pay the ferryman. The placement of the coins on the eyes was tradition for this family, there were graves where the coins were put on the forehead, on the mouth, next to the head, or variations of other positions on or next to the body.
