“Have you ever danced before?” Dani tilted her head to regard Sachihiro as he walked beside her. The moon above dulled the colors around them to pale silvers but did nothing to stunt the gleam of mischief in his eyes.
“Yes…” She answered carefully, sensing a snare in his words. “At banquets.” Sachihiro lifted a paw in offering. “Dance with me.”
Dani scoffed, eyes rolling as she continued walking. “There isn’t any music to dance to.”
She’d only gained a few paces of distance when the lion began to whistle. A pause and a slow look over her shoulder - Sachihiro had stopped atop the last dune. The tune was a familiar one. It was a love ballad. Not one from the desert, for those she wouldn’t have known. This was a song from Dani’s own country, one sung often in celebrations held by those well beneath her standing.
“I'll swim and sail on savage seas
With never a fear of drowning
And gladly ride the waves of life
If you would marry me.”
Dani let her eyes drop as Sachihiro padded down the sand towards her. His steps were as careful as though stalking wary prey. Perhaps, she wondered as her heart began to flutter, that was not far off.
“No scorching sun nor freezing cold
Will stop me on my journey
If you will promise me your heart
And love…”
It was then that he paused, his gaze trying to catch hers. Dani turned her face away, chewing the corner of her lip in a rare show of apprehension. Though his smile didn’t fade Sachihiro sighed and began to turn to continue walking. It was this gentle acknowledgement of her discomfort that buried Dani’s shy tremble and bid her answer,
“And love me for eternity…”
Sachihiro’s ears perked as he looked back up at the lioness in surprise. Dani met his gaze for a moment before her blue eyes fell again, fur flushed hot. She drew a shaky breath.
“My dearest one, my darling dear
Your mighty words astound me,”
Sachihiro offered his paw again as Dani’s voice grew in its confidence. With a small smile she rested hers over his, linking their forearms as they initiated the steps of the dance.
“But I've no need for mighty deeds
When I feel your arms around me.”
Sachihiro released a victorious chuckle.
“But I would bring you rings of gold
I'd even sing you poetry
And I would keep you from all harm
If you would stay beside me!”
Dani’s eyes sparked as their bodies began to intertwine. Never touching but coming within a hair of one another, a push and pull of energy.
“I have no use for rings of gold
I care not for your poetry
I only want your hand to hold
I only want you near me”
Never had the Empress danced with the freedom she now felt. This was no performance for a judging audience. It was an expression of emotion in its purest form. Neither lion nor lioness could resist the tug of the other, laughing and bounding with the breathless joy of lovers as their voices mixed.
“To love and kiss to sweetly hold
For the dancing and the dreaming
Through all life's sorrows
And delights
I'll keep your laugh inside me
I'll swim and sail a savage seas
With never a fear of drowning
I'd gladly ride the waves so white
If you will marry me!”
With Wu’s light turning them to silver the pair danced again and again through the night, sharing songs and love until they could speak no more.
