It is upsetting that Grammys made this new category thats so obviously aimed at BTS, but at the same time I know it would make me (and I think BTS too) happy for them to win any Grammy. The first grammy they were nominated for was just album packaging, and had they won that you know BTS and army would be just as proud. I think BTS will submit for the global category next year, along with many others. What's sad is that this past year they submitted for 7 categories but only got a nom for 1. The lack of nominations sticks out to me as a snub more than not winning. Finally, people need to remember that BTS are still young. They will have a long career. Many people do not win a grammy for their first, or fifth, or even tenth nomination. BTS will be a presence in the global music industry for a long time and we all know how strong their passion for music is. They will keep creating and someday the win will come.

Talking about the Grammys, I think about the queeen, Beyonce. Beyonce does have the most awards- 28 Grammy awards (with 79 nominations. But except for two, she has primarily won in the Rap, R&B, Urban Contemporary, Music Video, categories. Beyonce, an artist who is incredibly prolific and popular has only won two the "mainstream" awards since she was first nominated in 1999. Maybe, maybe this Global Performance award won't be the only grammys, Non-Americans can win, but I'm not holding my breath. It is very good that yes, Grammys have done away with the Secret Committee's. The Weeknd and BTS deserved so much better.

If this new Grammy award is to acknowledge artists in other markets around the world who are making noise in places outside of the US, then I think the Grammys are diversifying and giving voices and platforms to foreign artists. However, if this award is being used to push artists who are starting to make noise in the US to a most likely untelevised and unknown category, then it is silencing artists and being used to gatekeep. The award itself is not bad. it’s how the Grammys voters use it. The Grammy voters haven’t changed their ways in 50 years so I don’t predict a good outcome. Basically David and Danny are both right.

BTS doesn't need the award, but HYBE and Korea government need it. It's so obvious that the members are facing so much pressure after they broke into US market and being elevated to "nation hero" level. of course they are adults and are all very mature in thinking but the fact that their success is now a nation pride thingy will never allow them to miss any chance of winning.

Also, sad to see IZONE go, but in its the norm unfortunately. I have enjoyed many a band who have split up or disbanded over the years. Ones such as KARD. They were great.

Third, the issue of women joining the military. i see the logic behind this and why people would suggest it. I also see why it is a highly debatable topic with many people talking so much about gender equality these days. I do not personally see it as a bad thing for them to join. Although, this will certainly affect many female performers and celebs, so I see why there would be an unsettledness among them. I am waiting to see how the potentially next debate of Transgender persons joining the military will go.

The Best Global Music Performance award may not necessarily have been created for BTS. The Grammy's already had the Global Music Field as a category with Best Album as the only Award. The album award was reserved for international performers exhibiting "non-European, indigenous traditions" and the category was previously called World Music. So I don't think BTS or any kpop group would really fit into this description unless they are going to perform traditional Korean music. The Grammys has 86 different categories - 1 being Folk Album and Comedy Album. I don't see what the issue would be to create a Kpop category since I feel like more people are listening to Kpop then Folk music. It doesn't have to be only for Kpop but I think it makes more sense than just mixing it in with Pop. Those artists would still be eligible for the top awards (record, album, song, best new artist) and still have an opportunity to win a Grammy. But over all is this really that important? As long as the artists can make music and have a career is that the most important thing.

Second, these changes to the Scammys. Omg I don't know if i hate them or love them. In some ways I feel like the changes are good because things will be reviewed a bit more and it is seemingly making things more 'secure.' Although, no matter what changes that they make within the internal committee, it does not change the fact that money or manipulation can still change the outcome or results to whatever someone could want them to be. No matter what they do, there will always be these sort of issues that can arise. Not all people have gotten more understanding and purer intentions as time has gone on. Glad to hear they took Danny's advice though! Lol

How much less would we care about this if Yoongi never mentioned wanting a Grammy? 🤔. I don’t think I would give it much thought if he had not shyly uttered “Grammy” in the interviews. ☺️

Real Talk: Shout out to David and Danny who work to maintain their professional yet brotherly relationship for their subscribers 🌹🌹🌹

I would also like to add that American artists have won the Global Music Album award as well. I think a lot of people are viewing this as a “foreign” music category rather than a “global” music category. If it is just for BTS, I’m not okay with it. But like you said, that might not necessarily be the case.

I feel like people in the kpop fandom overestimate how popular kpop is in the west. Most people don't know much about kpop or bts. I know it's hard to understand when we listen to kpop and spend so much time and money on kpop but the average person who hears Dynamite or Ice Cream on the radio won't think twice about it. The Grammys being an American award show will always give American artists the bigger advantage, especially when BTS is up against people like Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga who are more known to the mainstream US audience. But what about artists from the UK or even latin artists? British artists have been mainstream in the US for a long time and latino music has slowly made it's way to mainstream music in the US despite being here forever. The new category could give international artists like BTS a chance to join the club of a few people who can say they have a Grammy. People who oppose this new category should consider whether they want BTS to have a Grammy or not, because if the Grammys didn't make any changes and the same thing ended up happening we'd be right where we started off And like Danny said they can chose to submit their application to whatever award they want. If they feel it isn't worth the time they can chose not to participate like the Weeknd. The same should go for Armys, if they feel taken advantage of then they should boycott. If anything this could be a path for international artists to receive Grammys and BTS has played a critical role in doing so.

I agree with Laura and Jesi's points. This is a classic example of "otherism". The word "global" is so vague and meaningless and it suggests a sense of otherness. British musicians like Ed Sheeran or French acts like Daft Punk would never be pigeon-holed into a "global" category. I do, however, think the Grammys ending the secret committees is a step in the right direction. Who's to say that BTS can't win both the Global Award and one of the major awards. Parasite won Best Picture AND Best Foreign Film.

Andrew

As an American and ARMY, I don’t care for the Grammys creating a separate international award. I agree with David in that it doesn’t feel equal to the rest of the categories. UK, Australian, Irish and European groups easily compete in the mainstream award categories. The only reason Kpop or other Asian groups would be relegated to the “international” category is racism. Pure and simple. America is going through a lot of racism issues right now, not just with the Grammys. This new award feels like a Band-aid on a bigger problem - that the Grammys have a racism problem. They always have. Also, I get Danny’s point about BTS being able to submit to whichever category they want, but the Grammys has the right to put you into any category they want regardless. Last year, Justin Bieber submitted to the R&B award, but the Grammys took it upon themselves to nominate him in the Pop category. He was very public in his displeasure. BTS could apply for one of the mainstream awards, and Grammys judges could shove them into the international category anyway.

Jesi Ryan

Be fair generally public in US doesn’t care who win the Grammy, they will listen to the music they like..Done Agree with Danny. Music supposed to like you us happy enjoyable... award doesn’t mean everything.

In terms of Grammies: Separate but equal, is not equal. Creating a separate category to pigeonhole foreign artists, even ones who have monetarily and in many other ways surpassed American artists, is a pretense of separate “equality”. We in the US have a history of this type of behavior. In terms of mandatory military service for Korean women, I don’t think I have the knowledge or expertise to comment🙂

Laura

There is so much for me to catch up on but i will be there tonight finally.

캐서린 (Morton)

Ok, so let's say we were to make women serve some sort of mandatory service. Let's also assume we live in a fairy tale land where women can serve SAFELY and without being harassed and assaulted in a military environment since we all know how well women are treated in the CIVILIAN workplace in South Korea. How do the "men's right activist" korean equivalent then fulfill propose to continue the push towards gender equality in korea after that is achieved? Considering korea is listed like 118th of 144 in gender equality, would taking 2 years of mandatory military service for women somehow close the 34.9% gender pay gaps that favors men in the work place and economy (HIGHEST in ALL OECD Countries worldwide)? Would it remove the thousands of years of entrenched patriarchal systems of beliefs? How about providing childcare resources? Parental leave? Families systems where the woman isnt expected to bear the majority of homemaking and child rearing? Resources for women to escape domestic violence and divorce their abusers without being shunned in society? the complete lack of childcare resources and the harm that causes to womens careers for 20 YEARS vice 20 MONTHS? The vastly underreported sexual assaults and date rapes because women fear being labeled as easy? The spycam epidemic? Political representation in line with the gender gap? I'm honestly so tired of men crying equality over this one thing and ignoring the struggles of the women in their lives because of like 20 months of military service (I served 9.5 YEARS in US navy so admittedly my perspective is not very forgiving) while korea lies near the bottom in some of the largest global gender inequality reports IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD. If they fix that one aspect do you think women and men are now equal? Fuck no. So just fix it. And stop crying about it. Then let's see korea do work on the REAL and ACTUAL gender inequalities that are happening before your eyes and making South Korea an embarrassment among OECD countries. Let's be honest though, we all know what it's REALLY about to those men and it most certainly isn't REALLY about gender equality.

It seems like there’s some confusion about the new Grammys categories, and the idea that “Global Music Performance” was added specifically for KPop/BTS. While that conspiracy could be true, it’s probably helpful to point out that Best Global Music Album has been a category since 1992, so the Grammy’s are saying that they’re just adding a song award in that category. I’ve been trying to get more detail about what the qualifications for the award are, but it sounds like BTS wouldn’t really fit anyway. It seems to be an award for “indigenous traditional” music whatever that means. I think it’s pretty safe to say that BTS music is considered Pop, even if it’s not in English, so they would most likely only qualify for the pop category awards.

Hannelie

Tbh, as a woman I also do think it's kind of sexist to have military enlistment only for one gender and not for all but obviously that's easy for me to say since I wouldn't be affected by the petition being turned into new legislation. But it's also really obvious where people are coming from with this petition - out of all the issues that exist with the military service in South Korea that you guys also already touched on (e.g. not being exempted for medical reasons when you really should be, not being able to refuse for moral reasons which is a violation of human rights btw), this is what they want to advocate for? Sounds more like anti-feminist trolling to me.

Johanna

-For the grammys, I personally think that they made that category just because of the backlash they got from kpop fans. They had all this time to make that category, but they decided to do that now so they can get views. They scammed the weeknd, and Tyler the Creator spoke up against the grammys about the "urban" category they made. At the end of the day, it's about bringing in the big name artists, by lying or not, so they can make money off the views. -For women mandatory enlistment, I don't think I can make an opinion on it because I'm not from Korea nor do I live in Korea.

At the end of the day, I really don't care if BTS wins a grammy or not, whether it be a new category or a major one. An award doesn't make me like a group a more. If BTS wants to apply for a grammy, then I'll support them and understand their reasoning for wanting to apply. If they don't, I'll also support them and understand. I really don't think we, as Army, get to feel offended. BTS are the ones applying and deciding for themselves what they want to do with their work, not Army.
