Inside a night light socket plate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=225LhPh5uxk

I pretty sure this is a clone of the lamplighter plate if that was the first one.  In keeping with clones it's incredibly cheap at just a couple of dollars, although it does come with the usual hazards of using uncertified electrical devices.

The circuitry is quite neat although there is a suspiciously small dropper capacitor.

There's an eBay search link in the video description.

I like to play along at home by drawing the circuit on <a href="http://www.falstad.com/circuit/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.falstad.com/circuit/</a>

Would be nice if there was some way of switching them off

Jonathan Smith

Ah, that was nice.

Fun little hat tip to Big Clive at the beginning of this video <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLMrQx5jp54" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLMrQx5jp54</a>

My brother just installed these at his place. They are quite clever. I wondered if there is a UK version, but I guess not. I did not know that UK sockets are switched. Good stuff!

Michael Thompson

They've always had switches although you can get unswitched versions. It's actually quite convenient being able to leave stuff plugged in, but switched off. It also means there's no contact arcing as you put plugs in or out.

Big Clive

It's very low current so it probably doesn't pose much risk of arcing.

Big Clive

The side tabs on that cover plate look like a dodgy way to make an electrical connection. Also, every time I see the British plug/socket setup I think that it looks much better than our standard in the US from a safety standpoint.

Something I've always wanted to know: why do UK sockets all have switches? Is that a recent thing or an old thing?

Jamie Magin

Amazing. I just came in from a long tedious day replacing ALL the receptacles on the ground floor of my sons large home. Well Over 60 to be done! His ground floor was destroyed in the Houston flood. 4’ of water of very dubious provenance flooded in at night. Anyhow, we are almost rebuilt. When ordering up a tome of receptacles, switches, plates etc I saw this very item and thought I had to use a couple to try them. After collapsing on couch, as one does after a mind numbing day with screwdriver, I was uplifted by a couple of classic Big Clive sessions! And one of them was totally on target re my interest! Perfect. Thanks Big Clive.

It's ironic that quite a lot of kickstarter projects seem to end up being a "kickstarter" for mass Chinese cloning.

This all started from a kickstarter campaign: <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/snappower/the-snaprays-guidelight-illuminate-your-life" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/snappower/the-snaprays-guidelight-illuminate-your-life</a>

Apparently the "real" version is either UL-listed or ETL-listed. I wouldn't even consider installing one permanently unless it is UL-listed. A side-by-side comparison might be interesting.
