Fixing two dead LED modules.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVuwzFhhCW0

These are two modules out of ceiling/bulkhead style lights.

I get the feeling that a lot of complete ceiling lights are being thrown out because they use modules like this that normal people can't fix or swap.  Fortunately we're not normal people, so we can repair ours.

Maybe „BPS confidential“ is written on the data sheets from the time of the development of the chips, and they don‘t bother deleting it before publishing the chips/data sheets. A very enjoyable video by the way, but I miss videos like „Make your own health salt“ or other random stuff ;-)

I saw Clive blew the third LED at the 22:35 mark with a little puff of smoke. Interestingly it was still lit when he bridged out the three sections at the 22:30 mark, but then blew once he removed the multimeter probes.

I thought the Isle of Man was experiencing an earthquake when you hit the camera.

I was expecting you to throw in a replacement PLCC2. I couldn’t live with 1 LED missing, it’d make my itchy every time I saw it.

Cool video. Replaced some old halogen fixtures at home with similar Chinese led sets. Now I know what to do if (when?) they die.

I got my degree in electronics engineering back in the 80's when you actually performed component level repair on circuit boards. Now, you just replace the whole board, if not the product. I repair whenever possible to this day.

You're right, I couldn't imagine retiring. I don't think there'd be a market for repairing stuff like this. It would require that the non technical people removed the bits from their fittings and then refitted them. They'd probably rather get someone in to change the fitting.

Blobbing did turn out easier with the close spacing of the pads.

Big Clive

Watched it twice and jumped both times you hit the camera lol.

He's not going to retire. He'll just keep bodging things and shorting across failed parts until he keels over. "Okay, right. Today I'm going to pop open my pacemaker and see if I can increase the frequency a bit..."

ROFL! I need a bumper sticker that says, "WWBCD?"

Have you considered a mail order repair service for these sort of things? You might be inundated, but it might be a lucrative hobby if/when you ever retire!

At least until the lawyers get involved. My company routinely scraps dozens and dozens of PC boards filled with microcontrollers, FETs, LEDs, and passive components either because of a design flaw or obsolescence, as well as perfectly good, often brand-new parts including things like stepper motors, and no one is allowed to take any of it home because the legal department says, "mumble mumble accidents mumble terrorism mumble liability". It's enough to make a hardened dumpster-diver like me shed a tear. I often find myself buying things for projects exactly like things work threw away in the last week. :/

He survived the storm!!!! #PrayForClive

Woo Hoo! New video! Wasn't expecting videos what with the weather and your heater and all, Clive. I think I would have tried to "blob" the solder between those LED pads, but using wire is obviously better, especially with multiple locations to bridge.

In a throw away society the tinkerer or hobbyist have a near unlimited source of fun.
