Inside a firework lamp.

By popular request, a look at one of these lamps that creates an optical effect of lots of points of light trailing into the distance.

Clive should file a patent application for that cordless Xray device!

I got to get me one of those X-Ray machine!!

Thanks Clive!

Big Clive

Can’t find the video about the second bulb with PCB “Calex” is it named?

Manoel

Seán, a half-decent directional antenna on the roof should help mitigate any local sources of interference. Of course, you could always listen to the BBC over the internet

Gordo

I'll second that - I bought a PL-880 for SW listening while away since it demodulates SSB, and the FM reception is nothing short of amazing!! I've moved over to almost entirely filament LED lights as they use passive droppers and produce almost zero interference

Gordo

If you check out the "Applied Science" channel, Ben demonstrates how to do metal sputtering in your garage

Gordo

those tecsun radios have the best FM reception of any radios Ive ever come across. i believe there is some DSP going on, but the recption is fantastic

SD

Mine was iced tea but pretty much the same reaction. I did not see that coming.

Howard Simons

I'd like to see a marriage of the starlight picture and this fireworks effect. Maybe the pinpoint of the fiber optic would help the washed out issue. I've wanted to play around with the mirror coating sprays.

Jim

Switch-mode power supplies are even a pain on FM. I bought a Tecsun PL-880 as I wanted to pick up the BBC stations across the border. With everything unplugged, it's wonderful - I pick up BBC radio 1-4 stations very clear in mono plus various other distant stations, whereas my regular FM radios don't have a hint of sound on the same frequencies. Switch on the LED room light (presume is switchmode) or plug-in my laptop, etc and these weaker stations get drowned in static noise. Might need an outdoor antenna next...

Seán Byrne

Some do have switching regulators in them, but many are either a capacitive dropper or a linear current regulator with the ability to regulate down if they get too hot.

Big Clive

Love the filament LEDs as they produce (almost) no interference in the HF amateur radio bands, unlike the switch-mode lamps, some of which produce huge amounts of broadband mush

Gordo

Your X-ray almost made me spill my tea across my monitor!

Big Clive destruction videos crack me up. Maybe I like the destruction bit too much because all my home renovation projects always stall after the destruction.

Indeed there are better versions. I have 3 bigger versions and they all look very good! You cannot see the filaments inside. The first one I got (surprise find at the supermarket) doesn't use the filament but some smd leds on a pcb. This one is my absolute favorite because as a bonus it gives a beautiful pattern of light dots on the wall. I then ordered the others on Ebay and was a bit disappointed they were different... they have filaments and no light projection on the wall. Still look pretty. But now I have seen your video I might try to open one very very carefully to change the LEDs.

The mirroring looks like the type used for christmas tree ornaments. It's done using a liquid that is basically a silver salt solution mixe with some sugar as a reagent. You put it inside the glass bulb and swirl it around, that way a layer of silver is deposited on the inside. That process is quite easy to do in mass production. Sputtering the inside of a glass bubble is quite difficult. Besides, you can easily make the little holes by spraying something oily insde the bubble with a spray bottle before putting in the silver solution.

I run a small X-Ray machine at work and could not stop laughing. I was making lunch and turned around to see. Fantastic!

Michael Thompson

Thanks to the low functional requirements, any hammer can be used as an X-ray machine.

Big Clive

The problem with wish is that it's not as cheap as it seems. They inflate their "was" prices and I often look up interesting items to find it cheaper on ebay.

hay clive, have you checked out Wish.com to find something to take apart, there "Gadgets" section is a amazing place to find some cheap tech.

Western Canadian Guy

Is the Stanley X-Ray worth the extra money over the Chinese knockoffs I see on Ebay? Haven't seen the Vise of Knowledge for a while.

Rob Clark

Saved me a fiver, and it lasted longer with you than it would have done with me.
