The rechargeable flame lamp video.

Here's the video hinted at earlier. It's quite neat.

I'm also doing a little test. I used to disable non-skippable adverts at the beginning of my videos and YouTube then removed that option completely. Recently they enabled them again without warning (their new interface doesn't even show the advert types that will be displayed).

I usually go to the old interface to disable them, but have left them enabled on this video. I want to see what length they actually are. Anything more than 10 seconds starts getting annoying, so let me know what sort of length they are if they show up.

Thanks to you guys the channel only has one advert enabled per video to cover YouTube's hosting and delivery costs. I see a very annoying trend on other videos of a continuous stream of adverts all the way through the video. I think one is ample. Preferably at the beginning so there are no interruptions to the video itself.

These lamps are neat and not too expensive, so maybe worth getting for the bits.

I did trace the tracks and it looks like the last section of the PCB can be cropped off to make a thinner (1" or 25mm diameter) core of LEDs for narrower lamps.

picked up 4 of these the day this vid went up and they finally arrived. of the 4 1 was behaving like yours so I cracked it open and it was the exact same issue. after checking them all 4 have MISSING solder on one of the switch pads and are making connection through pressure only so it looks like a standard issue with them or the current batch (possibly why they are cheap on ebay!)

Hi John. The unit does have charge protection so it should be fine to leave it on charge continuously. The circuitry starts to shut off as the cell voltage reaches the end of capacity so it should draw very little current once it reaches the bottom charge level. I don't think it will suffer any damage if left running.

Big Clive

Clive I do have a question, hope you do not mind. The ones I got the other day do not run for long just a few hours because pf the many LEDs my cell took 1000mAh charge. The flashing diminishes as the cell voltage drops as you have shown. What will happen if it is left on for a few days, will it damage the cell ? I guess I will have to open it and check what it is doing at the end of the charge. I will be giving this to an 83y old so he may forget to turn it off at the end. I wonder if it would run full time while charging with no ill effect ? Another test for me I guess (my thoughts are it will be OK) My father in Canada put some of the mains powered fire bulbs in the driveway glass globe lamps and he has had many comments about them, lets hope they do not get nicked by the sticky finger brigade. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. John

Refund arrived. They've relisted 35p cheaper. Promptly reordered, looks like it went through this time. Let's see whether it arrives or not!

Stephen Eyles

Potentially I guess, I disabled my adblock hit ctrl+f5 and got one ad after the other, I did skip as soon as the button presented though. Honestly I personally dont mind them when they can be skipped.

Drachnien

I had the same stock message when I tried ordering a street light from a Chinese seller. I guess it really means they've either run out of stock or screwed up the pricing. They usually end up refunding you and then mark the item as "unpaid".

Big Clive

Two adverts? Was one from the end of a previous video? Mine should only have one.

Big Clive

A letter like that makes ME want one! LOL

Michael Thompson

That's interesting (impersonation over!) Ordered one of these lights and look at the response I got: Dear friend , Thanks for your order and fast payment . But we find some quality problem of our goods.. All items has been return to the factory . Sorry for this trouble. Maybe you need it in special day or really like our item . We don't want to let you upset ,just try too make sure you could get what you expect . So how about we refund you first ? Really sorry for that , Waiting for your news I wonder whether they've been inundated with orders following your video?

I hacked together a set of lamps very similar for use over the summer in a little canopy setup I put up in the back yard. I call mine "Flame-Os", just because that's what came to mind. I used the hanging rechargeable lamps Clive featured in a video a while back that utilize a phone battery soldered in and solar panels that plug in to charge and the long diffuser and LED roll from an AC-powered one. Once I realized the voltages were similar I soldered them up and glued the base and diffuser together. We easily get three or four evenings use out of them before they have to be charged up again. Between these and the solar flame lamp I built it has been quite a nice effect to bring outdoors. I knew it was just a matter of time before I saw dedicated ones.

I remember Clive calling the removal of the chip ID "Childish". I thought it was so amusing as a description that I adopted it myself when describing these components to customers. This is usually during the discussion about how their unit is not repairable and will have to be replaced outright. (They LOVE that)

I had a 15 second add for a rain gutter leaf guard. I don't own a house. Way to go Targeted Advertising.

Robert Sanges

I download Clives videos with youtube-dl on Linux. I cut and paste from the Patreon email and miss the adverts. I make up for it here.

Nuts 'n' Proud

15 second skippable after 5 seconds fiver ad

Drachnien

No ads at all for me. Evidently I’m not worth advertising to. Yay!

Dermot Conner

On my iPhone I got a 25 second ad for a game called “Z Game” that I could skip after 5 seconds. On my Apple TV4, I got a 10 second ad for the new “LEGO Duplo cargo train” which I could also skip after 5 seconds!

Bo Holbo Rasmussen

The option to run an advert at the end has been an option for a while, but I prefer to keep advertising to a minimum. Given the way my videos tend to end quite suddenly it would slam straight into an advert.

Big Clive

I have noticed that some YouTubers are putting an advert before the video and when the video finishes, that way, no interruptions of the video. I let the advert run whilst I look for the next video to watch. I went over to YouTube and got a skippable 30 second Groupon ad which I let play as I wrote this as it was more hassle to change the window, skip and then come back.

evilution

I ended up with a two-minute skippable for Udemy's photography course. To be honest, I usually watch YouTube vids while washing up and sorting the kitchen, so I'd prefer a short non-skip ad so I'm not prodding my iPad with soggy hands!

Ads don't appear in cross-site embeds on patreon, it is part of their exclusivity. However, on YouTube it gave me a 15 second ad for Toyota. (Let me add this before the flaming starts [pun not really intended]) Anybody that is seeing YouTube ads on patreon embeds needs to allow cookies from YouTube AND patreon and then clear their browser cache to clear the js_prefs file stored for one month from YouTube.

No Youtube premium here, I was watching the video from mobile (so no Adblock either) and didn't get any ad

I got a (skipable) 5 minute ad on selling fidget spinners. I like these lights, I have one modifed for usb connected to the tv in an old molton brown candle coloured glass cup with old wax residue. Freaks some people out when the see the lead come out the top as it is pretty realistic!

It does seem to work while the lamp is charging and the current drawn by the lamp is lower than the charge current, so it should keep it topped up too.

Big Clive

So here's my question - does the lamp work while the battery is being charged? If so, the value of the lithium cell is less important, at least for some uses I can think of. On the other hand, it looks to me like there's room for a larger lithium cell in there - a 26650, perhaps?

I got a single skippable ad (Wikibuy).

Rand Gray

Technically speaking it's a bit naughty of them to ship them by air. Escaped mercury can cause serious damage to aluminium structures in planes. But great little switches nonetheless and good that they're still available.

Big Clive

No ads for me. I'm using Adblock Plus on Google Chrome on macOS Mojave.

Gadgetman

I bought some of those mercury tilt switches recently and they arrived today :)

Using the app on an iPhone, I got a skippable ad. The ad was 1:20, but did let me skip after 5s.

Keep in mind that YouTube is dumping the in line annotations soon also, so if you had a link to another video inside the current one, looks like they'll just delete that link showing up.

I didn't get any ads whatsoever.

I don't see any ads on Patron or Youtube on any videos whatsoever. Not paying extra for anything e.g Youtube premium. Not using the Youtube app as I disabled it a year ago. It was full of obtrusive ads although I recall there were few ads if any on Big Clive videos. I use Chrome, Edge, or Firefox browsers to access YouTube instead. I admit I installed an adblocker in the Firefox browser and set it to allow unobtrusive ads. But not sure why Chrome and Edge don't show adverts.

John Russell

No ads/banners here. I use Cyberfox with Adguard.

No adverts Chrome "Adblock Plus" Just ask and I will put up with adverts on your channel, I am sure others will do the same since you waste very little time dragggiiinnnggg out your content. It reminds me a bit of "Blaster Bates" delivery almost straight to the point with plenty of laughs, I still get a BANG out of his stuff. I wish I could selectively opt in for adverts on some youview channels like yours and a few others. I tend to watch on a laptop so I do not see any adverts, however I do see adverts when using the tablet or my phone on rare occasions. Please keep doing what you do a mixture of simple and complex. I think others will agree you keep a happy balance but I do like the more technical... but would be equally happy if you rubbed a balloon on your jumper and stuck it to the ceiling ;-)) This just reminded me of the cartoons "the far side" page down the link to see the babies, "Late at night and without permission, Reuben would often enter the nursery and conduct experiments in static electricity." ~Gary Larson https://diasp.org/tags/far-side Early Happy Christmas CLIVE John

John Harrison

Similar here - It covers Google Music, great for my hour drive to and from work. I originally started with Patreon (Clive being my first) to get access to the private comment feed as I got fed up with YouTube burying my (and other new) comments several pages deep below the top +1'd comments.

Seán Byrne

I get no ads because I'm paying for YouTube premium. I prefer supporting via patreon because I think google has enough money, but it's a pretty nice to never see ads at all!

I got a skippable ad

The Tinkering Shed

I didn't get a non-skippable advert. I just got a banner about 10 seconds in.

i got it

God 420

I must admit I use YouTube Premium as the adverts got on my nerves and I do view a lot of content on the platform (I do wonder how this affects revenue)

Christopher Smith

Great vid Clive. Very interesting light.

Man people are fast on here

Neil Tonks

Yay, Called it :D
