Test lead versus 240V.

Rather predictably I didn't have the camera running when I did this. It was hilarious. I was trying to trace a problem on a mains voltage PCB and bridged live to DC with the probe while trying to get a good connection. The PCB now has a few more problems, mainly involving missing tracks.

why dont you just record these things then if something happens then you can have video proof and then just cut it into the video.

When I bought my first house, I had enough work for myself, so I hired an electrician to wire the place (to my specifications). He said he'd give me the "new house rate" if I stripped out all the existing wiring. I removed all the fuses and started cutting wires until one blew up on me! It turned out that the house had at one point been a duplex, so it had two fuse boxes, and I hadn't noticed the second one. Fortunately, I was wearing the appropriate protective gear and sustained no injury myself, but those wire cutters had a notch blown out of them.

John Rehwinkel

Cutting through a mains cable which you think is disconnected, but isn't, can also illicit the brown trousers effect

Gordo

I wonder if a fuse had blown in the battery backup.

Big Clive

One time I got a nice little fireworks show when simply trying to change a plug in the back of a battery backup from passthrough to battery supported and the plug was being sort of stupid to pull out. I was working in a tight space and then all of a sudden the chain from the donation box fell across the two prongs and then I had a nice little fireball shoot out at me. Needless to say that battery backup was toast then replaced by the company that provides our till system.

Been there - done that. Brown trouser time when I jerked my hand back and nearly stuck the now toasted probe into my eye!

Malcolm J Bannister

Ah, yes. Reminds me of my friend who changed the starter on his vehicle without disconnecting the battery. Shorted out a spanner on it, turned it into a nice U-shape. (Caused a nice burn too, just before he threw it across the yard.)

Travis Terrell

I would hate to see a Clive re-enactment simply for our video-graphic sadistic amusement! If Electro - boom shows us why What Clive did was wrong, I'll join his patreon campaign!

Jim

You don't need 240v either ... I got very specatular results with a metal watch strap across a 5 volt mainframe computer bus bar. Fortunately the power supply tripped out before the hundreds of amps did any serious harm.

Gary Bleads

All true engineers have a probe like that. I certainly do.

Phil Collins

I once heard MANY years ago: "Grab the back of the TV set, and FEEL the power of comedy!!"

Chuck Kirchner

The short was just across one probe tip.

Big Clive

I think they're used to the loud bangs and lights dipping.

Big Clive

On the public Exploding Kryptonite game video, I saw someone guess "M for multimeter" that day it went live. I thought "nope" and then this post appears....

Seรกn Byrne

Ah yes been there done that. Otherwise known as "brown trouser time"

How did the multimeter fare? I mean, normally none of us test out the CAT ratings on those things... seeing the aftermath would be interesting :D

Mark Dennehy

You will see the aftermath when I join the bits of that video together. There's not mcuh left of the PCB to do it to again.

Big Clive

BG, I think you owe it to your Patreons to do a retake with your camera running. What the heck are we supporting you for? Still photos?

Clive. Do your neighbours...worry about you? they must hear all sorts of strange and wonderous noises and be subjected to lots of electrical burny smalls too

Trying some โ€œtigโ€ welding again ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜บ

Those moments when the fault blows itself clear but takes half the PCB along with it... time for a nice strong cup of tea and a moment of quiet reflection. :) A colleague of mine was once poking around inside an amp that he was working on with an uninsulated screwdriver while it was still connected to mains. I started to say "Hey, you know that's still live right..." Too late... BANG! He went and had a wee sit-down while trying to figure out how to explain to the client that his very expensive amplifier was now going to take an extra two weeks to fix... :)

Chris Talbot

We demand 24/7 filming! How dare you have fun without us. J/K Have you re-counted all you digits? BTW Blueiris is good for recording 24/7

Oh dear, did you shit ya kecks??

It's good to remind yourself every now and then that electricity has the capacity to remove bits and pieces off the human realm :-)

"[...] more problems, mainly involving missing tracks" - Big Clive, 2018. :D

Aaron the Tinkerer

Should have used GS38 approved probes, might have saved the day.

I had this happen to me at my last house. I was pretty sure the lighting above my bed had given me a tingle, but to be absolutely sure I thought I'd get out my meter and confirm it. Not only was it live at 120v and completely unshielded to prying fingers, but I accidentally bridged it with one probe and it passed enough current through it to melt the tip right off. I'm really glad I no longer live there, that place was a deathtrap. Here's a melted multimeter tip picture: https://twitter.com/Foone/status/846176879308488704

Foone Turing

That would be a welding rod.

Wim

You let the angry pixies loose and also let the magic smoke out!

Time for a call to ProbeMaster!

lesson learned. always have camera running

"BREAKING NEWS!!!.. BIG CLIVE MURDERS PCB DURING ROUTINE OPERERATION!!" Autopsy at 11!

Jono Harley

220... 221 ... whatever it takes..

Jeff Groves

You're going to have to rename your channel to "BOOM Clive".

Howard Simons

We've all done it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyaLZHiJJnE

John Carr

Ah, who hasn't been there? But really, isn't the suspended terror half of the fun?

BANG !!!! WOOPS ! Time for a beer and a new fuse and probe

God 420

Or bigclive live

Jonathan Brown

Ooh I've done that more than once...

iamdarkyoshi

You need a dash cam above your work bench for unexpected excitement!

Time for a clean pair of underwear!

A co worker did that but managed to pop a lithium battery as well.

Michael Thompson

Yep, I have a test lead that looks just like that.

Chris Parsons

I think I have a little bit of that kind of damage on one piece of my equipment. I hope the tracks fried are not from expensive piece of equipment.
