Testing meters with a custom resistance box.

I've been meaning to do this for a while.  Make a custom resistor test box and then use it to test a wide selection of meters.

Meters tested were a high accuracy Amecal, an old fluke, two old installation testers, a tacklife monster, a Uni-t UT210E and a couple of generic cheapo meters.

Don't you have the UNI-T UT 139C at home? I would like to see if it's in the range when you do another video with the resistance box :)

Clive, have you ever made a video about a Decade Box and what they are used for?

Jeremy Impson

My MasTech meter does the same thing.

There are test point adapters meant to accept the long needles that are common with probe leads.

Jeremy Impson

I was originally going to do that, but didn't like the idea of the screws on the face of the unit.

Big Clive

It would have been easier to fit the sockets to the lid of the project box.

Clive-itis: noun [Medical] A side effect of the continuous watching of Big Clive videos, in which the viewer shows symptoms of being overcome by frequent urges to... "purchase stuff". Well… that’s a nice Uni-T clamp meter to add to my toolbox!

Phil in the kitchen

I looked up the CPC meter. The current price is Β£3.98 including tax. I'll tag one on the end of my next order of low ESR capacitors.

I own a little yellow DT830B meter and a Fluke 25 that came from the Ministry of Defence in a massive case. I just ordered a UNI-T UT210E.

The little Uni-T clamp meter with the DC clamp function also reads RMS. It's got a staggering spec for its price.

Big Clive

The cheapo with the rubber holster was from CPC. I popped the lid and had a look inside. It's the first I've seen with two ceramic 20mm fuses. One for 5A and one for 500mA. That means it can break high accidental fault current in a controlled manner. The standard replacement fuses also cost about 10p each which makes a refreshing change.

Big Clive

Interesting that the TACK meter kinda "settled down" into its readings, reading a percent high for a short period.

Dustin

I have that same meter as well as a newer Klein meter. I bought the Fluke over 20 years ago for $169 which made it the second most expensive piece of test equipment I have after the $600 Hitachi 40 Mhz scope. Great meter although it doesn't read RMS voltage.

George Cohn

I have the same old Fluke in grey, it's still my go-to meter on the bench depite it's age and some case damage, it never fails. I got a small meter from cef in a kit a while ago, think it was Atheos or something like that, from the word go the DC voltage measurement was off, turns out it uses it's own PP3 as a reference so when it's charge drops the reported DC voltage rises, I had some 18650 cells reading 6.2v, back to the Fluke!

The Tinkering Shed

Those small cheap meters are a boon for a youngster starting electronics, and are good enough to have one in the van glove box. (Your trusted CPC sells them for Β£3.30 - surprisingly Banggood can't match that). I hope you do test their other features in due course.

I thought the same as you, Leonard - calibration would involve re-setting the meter somehow (a magic screw deep inside the workings, only accessible to the highly qualified calibrators). Looked the word up - very disappointed to find it means nothing more than to COMPARE with a traceable reference device. Nice little earner for someone - they don't even need a screwdriver - or even a spudger!

Keith Miller

I did ponder that, but I also have a pile of eBay meters to test too. I should do a bulk voltage, current and resistance test.

Big Clive

Are you sure it wasn't set to DC for such a low voltage reading?

Big Clive

I had a running argument with my calibration guy that what he did was certification not calibration because no adjustments were possible. He never agreed. Think he thought I was accusing him as being "certifiable".

Very nice. I must build one for my multitude of meters......

Chuck Kirchner

Aww, I got all excited thinking you'd be diving into the box of aliexpress meters I sent you and then got all sad again Clive :D

Mark Dennehy

Awesome Clive congrats!

Michael Thompson

I fitted a 2nd MCB yesterday. Through the breaker that I thought was for that circuit. Grabbed the nearest multimeter, the cheapest one ever. Tested at about 2.5v which seemed a bit low. Went and got my Fluke. 240 volts dead on. Never assume your meter is right. It might be worth having a voltage version of this box.

evilution

its that usefull it will only be used every 5 years to check up if the old meters are still as accurate then its back in it`s box for another 5 years. but I do like your way of thinking tho. Infact I am sure that I have a box of such interesting objects but I just canny remember where it went once the wife asked me to move it from the lounge coffee table quite a few years ago. neet Idea

I guess you can go yellow to yellow for a combined ohms reading. Might be handy for fine tuning resistors in a project.

evilution

Damn you, Clive! I was just about to go to bed! 😁
