And another demonetised.

I'm not sure which bit of my recent (unreleased) Japanese vaping device teardown and reverse engineering involved showing physical harm or distress.

And another demonetised.

Comments

All videos on my channel are set to "not made for children".

Big Clive

Sounds lile every bit of content is being analysed on upload. This probably happens with Google developed AI software. What box do you check on the suitable for children question?

Robert

I think they're referring to the lack of 'explosion control pie-dish' when they say 'uncontrolled environment'!! Better keep it visible in all your videos!

Stephen Eyles

Perhaps with these "controversial" videos that might get demonitised, launch them immediately to the general public.?At least you'll reap the revenue for the launch period before they crack down. I'm sure they just have a bot that trancribes the speech and throws keywords at at a human reviewer as a ticket.

Anton

That depends on whether it got flagged for review in the first place (either by the automated systems or a trusted flagger). Clearly this one did and that one didn't.

Mark Gray

Wow. But the old videos of cutting apart lithium batteries then talking about how they caught fire after filming was ok with youtube?

So, I talked to a few trusted flaggers, and they think that the reviewers may feel that you aren't being sufficiently safe and/or don't have the expertise. I guess working with electronics since before solid state isn't enough experience for them. Nile Red recently ran into this issue, and did a series of videos on lab safety that seemed to help. A quick safety warning at the beginning of a potentially dangerous video (see nurdrage) will probably help a great deal. A black screen with some disclaimer text that you read before beginning the video.

What a JOKE!!!! What physical harm??? possibly the use of the spudger being dangerous? What uncontrolled environment? Youtube needs a REAL workover!

Could Clive do a tear-down on a kitten?

Can we lodge an objection?

electronics have feelings too?

Ben Brown

🤦🏻‍♂️

Sounds like it's time for another Fanny Flambeaux. From the thought, "If I'm going to be accused of it, I might as well be guilty of it."

Sean M

Did you give it a BBFC 18 rating?

Andrew Donaldson

Maybe delete the video post so Youtube doesn't get any revenue?

Perhaps anything with an exposed lithium battery is now considered dangerous? Don’t mention it by name next time and instead refer to it as a power source and see if that helps. Another idea is to split the video into 6 or 8 segments and upload them all as separate videos to see what bits are demonetised. Should be an easy experiment to do, as you already have the footage.

Simon York

Youtube dont like anything thats not kittens and sunshine, but its youtube, they own the platform, not like you can fight it. I pointed this out to another youtuber on twitter and she blocked me, so I think youtube is winning its war of 'if you say the word poo' we just ban you from ads, against thin skinned youtubers, that way they dont have to pay them. But we know Uncle Clive, hes made of tougher stuff, he will prevail.

Ðementation

if they lack the education to know that you are showing something dangerous they will let it fly. That demonitized video of yours? To me it looked like a portable atomizer or fog machine powered by a compact lithium ion battery pack with built in BMS. Every YouTube algorithm just fell asleep reading that description. BNCP, the explosive created in the linked video is, how to put this, more lethal than every vape pen ever manufactured.

Bill Kerr

You knew you were dancing with fire. Try to tone it down a bit and just make harmless instructional videos like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a60UewomiCg

Bill Kerr

I think a time will come where apps like LBRY and Patreon will become the only way to watch and support anything except the most "agreeable" content.

LANDLINEMAN.com

Follow the money! They’re frit of losing revenue from JT and their mates. They do it because they can and because it’s in their interests to do so. This is 2020 — the reasons given for demonetising it are irrelevant and won’t bear scrutiny. Sorry, Clive, it’s the new world we find ourselves in.

But you ARE a professional. You're paid to make videos of disassembling! Not to mention, you are a professional "electrician / lighting" by trade.

Something happened last year. I did a video about a black fluffy cat-shaped power bank with a very tight cable port, and called the video "Destroying a tight black pussy." Right after that my videos stopped getting featured and my viewing figures plummeted for a LONG time until suddenly returning to normal again.

Big Clive

You caused mental distress to the idiots at YouTube tasked with finding reasons to demonitize it. & physical harm when they started bashing their heads against a brick wall...

Scott Miller

It's just YouTube at there usually bullshit

Simon Kyrollos

Mmm wonder if it is all just some code, devoid of any human revision. Annoying.

I wonder if when a human reviews it, do they actually watch the whole video? Or if they are just given a clip where the key words are said to verify that the speech to text worked correctly. Just a clip of you saying "Nicotine".

Elliott Krimchansky

Guessing it was the new black beard.

at least you didn't become shadowbanned yet like thunderf**t. So be careful.... (no, it's a terrible situation, but what can we do?)

Andreas Dorfer

Yeah, I would imagine that anything having to do with vapes is totally radioactive at this point. Frankly, inhaling anything other than 80/20 N2/O2 with water vapor and trace amounts of CO2 has a pretty good chance of unwanted short- or long-term health effects. There was also a degree of physical violence that was used in disassembling this item, however, I'm not sure that violence against things is actually against YouTube rules.

Paul Ste. Marie

It's literally just because it's vape related; a few youtube vape types have been utterly *humped* lately by the change in apparent rules on these things.

Steven Raith

Either the device itself or breaking out the drill, maybe the filling needle? Either way those Hue Mann Review-ers (assuming it actually was one) need a reality check or something because it looks like they're hiring people who might get derogatorily called "snowflakes" with that call.

Jackasses....

Chris Wiley

I suspect it could be that you show how to refill the device with 'non approved' liquid, despite using only a plain solution, now that some flavours are being outlawed

The Tinkering Shed

You obviously didn't put the fog generator in your explosion containment pie dish. Very non-professional. What were you thinking? Next thing you know you'll be setting fire to dolls. Oh wait......

Nobody.

Big Clive

You did a video recently where you were holding a bulbous black cylindrical object and moved it through your fingers while saying "Probe" slowly. Someone clearly unfamiliar with the strict sobriety of your channel may have mistakenly thought you were being suggestive......

Smoke ing tou yube One Moment PLEASE! Are they Polititions sorry thats a bad word too Soory bought the demonetize

William Nimmo

I'll bet smoking it was the dangerous part.

Kevin Hardisty

Probably the act of smoking it, the deranged minds of YouTube are pretty out there.

Here’s an idea should you want to go to the trouble the next time you come across one of these devices. Split the video into three smaller parts containing one for the charger one for the main device and another for the refill and see what happens to them?

At a guess, maybe they thought taking a of was harmful, or that replacing the fluid was dangerous?

I don't think it's a surprise to anyone that this happened - you did after all suspect that it might. Unfortunately, these reviewers are almost certainly paid by the video so the sooner they can fob you off, the better for them. That just ends up being a disincentive to provide a thorough review, which in this case should have yielded a better outcome.

Mark Gray

None of it is harmful or showing harm in any way, shape or form. The problem lies within the title of that mail you got. Don't beat yourself up trying to find errors where none are present. Can't deal logically with any of the PC nonsense today. They are snowflakes and think all their viewers are too.

Sometimes Youtube just needs a slap. Metophorically of course...... ;)

Simon Leah

Who else besides patreons see your video’s before it gets public? Is it a Patreon who gives this advise to the videoplatform?

Mike Weijmans

Unfortuatly this is the way of Goggle (YouTube) or any multinational 'social' platform. You the creator are a commodity to be bought/sold and yes ultimately tossed aside when either no longer profitable or threaten the driving force “profit” it’s business just like any other. YouTube have done a wonderful thing realizing the dreams of so many and helping the many to many model work. But it’s not a charity its not got some Ideological goal, it’s constantly adapting to keep its content popular for as many advertisers as possible. We can bitch and moan as much as we like but there’re are only a few limited if any true alternatives, voting with your feet wont necessary work either. I tried to get something of the ground about 12 months ago to help creators like yourself, as many have fallen foul first upsetting YouTube then getting a triple whammy kicked from Paypal and then Patreon with all revenue drying up overnight. To be fair some probably deserved it but not all. I wanted to setup a portal where the creator community would have the tools, the resources, and with numbers the muscle to the self-regulate. The portal would allow a creator to upload once to as many social platforms as possible there by giving them more exposure and more chance of revenue streams. The best way to fight a system is from within….

Holly Brereton

They probably paniced over the comment about impaling.

Michael

Must agree with Mr. Robertson above. Especially KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK CLIVE.

The problem is that most people can't make up their own minds. The stupidity of the general public is ever increasing.

Zeedijk Mike

Probably "distress" to big tobacco at showing how the device works and what a rip off the cartridges are! Keep up the good work Clive :)

Ross Robertson

I think they're more focused on "non controlled, non professional" environment. Which is patently ridiculous.

Bastards. Good thing there's Patreon!

Johannes Franke

Just saying that it’s a cleverly designed bit of kit can be considered an endorsement 🙄 big tobacco maybe? Whole worlds gone to shit! And I’m a “millennial”.

Geez and people think that Trump is a fascist. Youtube has him beat hands down.

Charles Bruckner

Perhaps you should keep the fire-containment tin within the shot?

Do I get to keep it after I've done its video teardown?

Big Clive

You have worked so very hard to get where you are and some sad prick with too much time I guess

I suspect the 'human' reviewer has lead a sheltered life and doesn't get out much.

John Russell

Precious little snowflakes who are trying to save the world. Out there cracking down on people who say VAPE! (The new four letter word.) 😮

I wonder sometimes what goes on in their heads? nanny state for snowflakes is here.

Mike Hughes

How about allowing us more sensible people to appeal against YouTube's decision is that beyond them. How patronising to assume that viewers can't make up their own minds.

Odd. I mean you did rip its head off and suck on it. And you did strip it bare and have your way with it. But it was in the name of Satan , I mean science. I really think it has more to do with you hurting potential advertizing revenue. Can't annoy potential advertizers.

Mark Trombley

This is how Skynet begins. It starts by demonetizing videos of people who harm electronics. Then a T-101 Terminator is sent to you in the mail!

Lostngone

How does it work? Does it rely on someone reporting the video, or is there some audio parsing for forbidden words? (Or both) Hopefully, it's just the latter then the "simple" workaround is to not say any of the trigger words, which is ridiculous in so many ways (and requires knowing what the words are). If it's haters somehow being able to get their way with spineless moderators then YouTube is definitely going up the creek and I'd happily support you on another platform if you choose to switch

Simon Howroyd

Ffs youtube moderator's seem to be a bunch of cretinous fools. Both Google and the advertisers need demonetisation see how they like it.

Assholes ruled by algorithms

Michael Thompson

This is before general release.

Big Clive

That's a good point. I'll have to be careful to avoid saying those words. Even when I use the things for flux and solder paste!

Big Clive

What's that all about Clive, total joke

Ya highly suspect they’re using voice to text to flag for review. One slip and they’re on to you. Or there’s jerks on the internets (gasp!) who flag stuff just to be jerks.

The Griffiths Family

YouTube share the same luck as PayPal, amazon and eBay. They got in early, so it would take something incredible to replace them.

Big Clive

Maybe it's because I stuck my finger up its little Japanese ass.

Big Clive

Once a human has checked it that option seems locked.

Big Clive

I said it twice. The second time when I realised I'd just blown the video by saying the "N" word. (Nicotine.)

Big Clive

As that claim is grossly incorrect I feel you should take action to appeal against it.

I think so, and maybe some advertisers that are less delicate.

Big Clive

YouTube is becoming so petty about anything. I realize that they have an uphill struggle, but they are going to have to get real or they will lose a lot of creators. They must remember that other big social media platforms have gone, once people start to vote with their feet.

The world has gone nuts

Neil Tonks

I think anything to do with vaping upsets the Trump Watchtower. So YT has to be ultra cautious. Dismantle a gun and toss bullets around would be OK though.

Mr B Shepherd

You Monster! Don’t you know Japanese vapes are people too!! 😂

Lostngone

One assumes it is their opinion of ‘non-professional, non-controlled’, sadly they don’t realise that, like electro-boom, to make these videos you actually need to be very professional & controlled. Bellends.

“acts performed in a non-professional non-controlled environment”. Surely that is every video on YouTube??

Adam Stewardson

Can you appeal this? The human reviewer clearly didn’t watch it 🤦🏻‍♂️

Wow, it’s actually becoming a joke now isn’t it? Do they ever give you a “real” explanation? I’m sure a “human” hasn’t really come anywhere close to analysing it. 🙄

Is it because you said "nicotine"?

syringes and needles, probably

Do you still get revenue from YouTube premium views though?

This is really getting out of hand. The demonetization review seems totally arbitrary.

Chris S.

Ridiculous...

Yep YouTube's gone crazy....
