Now here's something nice. (With weird circuit.)

I saw this in a local shop and bought it to see if it did actually rotate.

It does.  And the circuitry to switch the motor from a standard solar LED circuit is a bit weird.

Gotta get me one of those ;-)

Gordo

It looks like the sort of thing that might be found in BM homestores type shops.

I recognise names, but plan on doing a Patreon live stream soon.

I have seen these locally (with a different ornament so will def pick one up. I too assumed it to be a static thing made from surplus dessert bowls! I'm building a "rave on a plank" so this will be a great addition to the other hacked random LED lights and seasonal "projectors" on clearance.

I think it would work fine with a different LED. When the control chip is switched off, there won't be much current flowing through the inductor, so there will still be almost 1.2V at the other end of the inductor, and about 1V on the LED (even with the color changing one) because current can flow through the diode. But that isn't a problem, since the emitter of the PNP transistor is at a lower voltage (1V) than the base (1.2V). That transistor won't turn on unless the emitter is 0.6V higher than the base, which can never happen unless the chip is boosting the voltage. Very clever! Thanks for the teardown Clive!

I like this mechanism... I've been trying to overcome spinning light effects without having to use bushes...This is a great idea.....I'd be taking the cover thing off and placing it in a corner, letting the lights shine over where the 2 walls meet, think that would look nice...or even mount it in a tree with the solar charging panel section on a wire that can be positioned for maximum sunshine capture.

I've tried every permutation of descriptive terms and got nowhere ... ho hum.

I WANT ONE!

I did find these that seem to gave the same guts https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Solar-Power-Outdoor-Novelty-Rotating-LED-Stake-Lights-Walkway-Path-Flower-Sun/273837409866 # https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Solar-Powered-Rotating-Flower-Head-LED-Garden-Stake-Lights-Garden-Decoration/233353371575

At least there was no automated beard attack mode.....

I definitely want one of those. But I don't live on the IOM so I can see me trawling all the poundlandish type shops here in N.Wales. - but heh I enjoy it.

Mike Hughes

very simple but clever. I will have to see if I can get one from nearer to home. Thanks Clive

ORB Operation Rusty's Blanket? Orders Regarding Bodyguard? Sorry, Venture Brothers fan here... I love stuff like this. It grabs the mind and puts it in a different place for a few moments before all the noise comes back again...

Michael Thompson

Clive, you might try covering the gears in white lithium grease to quiet them. I've had reasonable success with this.

Mike Cowen

That is a pretty cool garden light.

Thanks Clive, one more quick question, with your live show, which I love, can you tell when Patrons are trying to ask questions? as you get so many people on ?

£20.

Big Clive

How much did it cost ?
