Questions for weekend stream?

Sometimes the chat goes a bit weird and pervy, so it's useful to have fresh subjects to change direction.

At least yours arrive, it's been 2 months since I've had any despite trying everything including 4 different email providers...

2021-12-07 23:05:23 +0000 UTCI'm not sure if there's a system to do that, but I'd rather put a Henley block in for a good solid connection and expandability. Even if it meant finding that someone had removed the fuse seal at some point in the past.

2021-12-07 02:32:34 +0000 UTCYes, many in the past. There's usually a table marker and it's generally just idle chat.

2021-12-07 00:14:52 +0000 UTCYou could tame the charge current down a bit. I often see a diode in series with the supply to these chips, possibly to lop off between 0.6-1V from the voltage the chip has to drop.

2021-12-05 12:27:46 +0000 UTCYou only need to know the right resistor value and voltage rating, and obviously the power rating.

2021-12-05 08:55:14 +0000 UTCWotcha - Couple of simple mod you can do for the Q5 is to add braces to the main support columns and adding dampeners to the rods. For more info on what you need to do, have a read of this - https://www.fastblinker.com/a-couple-of-mods-to-my-q5/

2021-12-04 21:58:11 +0000 UTCI love through hole for repairability. Old electronic music instruments would not be repairable when all was made using SMD components.
Frank
2021-12-04 21:56:04 +0000 UTCIt applies to AC, alternating current. A power factor of 1.00 is when the current draw follows the sine wave perfectly, like with a resistive load. All other cases where the current does not follow the sine wave as well the power factor is lower, like with inductive loads or capacitive loads.

2021-12-04 21:53:43 +0000 UTCA RC low pass filter should do the job.

2021-12-04 20:42:10 +0000 UTC3: look up old Sunbeam mixers... they used a mechanical governor to regulate the mixing speed, and a capacitor/resistor arrangement that was supposed to even out the spikes? The resistor is a big ceramic thing that looks handmade haha. I'm trying to fix/upgrade one, and I don't know if I can find the resistor in any other form than old salvaged originals people are selling...

2021-12-04 20:32:53 +0000 UTCI have a trip to ( South- ) Africa coming up and have a big stack of power banks in order to combat the power cuts or load-shedding as they call it. How is your experience with the power grid on the IOM? In NL everything is ridiculously stable. Now I think of it, we are actually very vulnerable in Western Europe because we are not prepared to deal with a long lasting or frequent power cut(s).
Frank
2021-12-04 20:32:32 +0000 UTCI have a commercially made joule thief in the form of a face with LEDs for "eyes". The twist is they flash and run for weeks on an old battery. It has a blob chip, and an electrolytic cap visible. Any ideas on how to make a flashing output, long lasting joule thief?

2021-12-04 20:19:22 +0000 UTCYou measurement is without a load attached. This is called capitative coupling. Given everything is wired up correctly. It is very low current, but it would be enough to dimly light up a LED light. Some of them have a special resistor inside to function as a load to prevent this kind of ghosting voltages.
Frank
2021-12-04 20:18:54 +0000 UTC1: You mentioned in a stream about UV lamps being put in old dryers to generate ions to freshen the laundry? I don't quite understand, but I plan to do that or put an ionizer in there, because my clothes come out smelling like cat litter and mold.

2021-12-04 20:18:05 +0000 UTCIve wondered what peoples thoughts are on the reliabality of SMD components compared to through hole. For example, Im building a project where it is a SuperCapacitor storage and auto shutdown for a RaspberryPi. I didnt design it, bu the person that did used 805 smd sized components. I cant see how these components can supply a high current (2amp). How can an 805 size Resistor be 1/4 watt. Sure, for Mouse's supercomputer, that size is fine.. Ive been in Electronics for 45 years and seen the change (still prefer though hole, even if the size of the PCB will be large)
2021-12-04 20:16:32 +0000 UTCTill date, what is the worst device from China that you have cracked open, safety wise and design wise?
2021-12-04 19:57:06 +0000 UTCWhat is power factor? I hear about this sometimes but I have absolutely no idea what it is or does.

2021-12-04 19:56:14 +0000 UTCI want to replace a potentiometer on an existing product with a 1khz PWM signal from a different power source. I plan to replace the pot with an optocoupler using a capacitor & bleed resistor for smoothing. I feel like I'm overlooking something obvious. Since that feeling usually ends up in smoke I welcome your input.

2021-12-04 19:46:30 +0000 UTCHave you done any single-perimeter 3d printing experiments other than those crystal lights? I made a planter with mine and it's holding up nicely!
2021-12-04 19:43:58 +0000 UTCI have an inverter running from a leasure battery powering my central heating pump during power cuts. I currently switch power over manually whenever needed, is there a way to make this happen automatically? 240 v supply
2021-12-04 19:40:51 +0000 UTCI have had quite a few mains powered capacitive dropper devices fail over the years compared to devices with a transformer. Due you think capacitive droppers are less reliable by design, or its due to poor quality capacitors / workmanship, or something else?

2021-12-04 19:30:11 +0000 UTCCan you explain how a solar panel system does not feed back in to the grid in the case of a power failure. What stops the solar system trying to back feed the grid.

2021-12-04 19:28:56 +0000 UTCWould be interesting to time how long it takes you to solder a certain small job, and then repeat it as the night goes on and more alcohol is consumed. Will it slow you down?

2021-12-04 19:24:43 +0000 UTCLead free solder. Do you use it for hand soldering? What about solder paste / heat gun for SMD? I donβt think Iβve ever seen you do that - any reason? Best PCB layout software and why itβs Sprint Layout. Tell us about your worst work related injuries. I have a feeling youβve had a few. 2021-12-04 19:18:39 +0000 UTCWhat are your thoughts on USB C and not all USB C cables being compatible with all USBC devices. (USBc to USBc I'm talking about) Anker cables charge my iPad at 15v 1.5A but generic cables either don't charge at all or at reduced rate. Nightmare trying to get cables that work at all or higher rates. Cheers.
