Questions for weekend stream?

Any questions for the weekend stream happening 2 hours from posting this message?

Sometimes the chat goes a bit weird and pervy, so it's useful to have fresh subjects to change direction.

Comments

At least yours arrive, it's been 2 months since I've had any despite trying everything including 4 different email providers...

Charleso

I'm not sure if there's a system to do that, but I'd rather put a Henley block in for a good solid connection and expandability. Even if it meant finding that someone had removed the fuse seal at some point in the past.

Big Clive

Yes, many in the past. There's usually a table marker and it's generally just idle chat.

Big Clive

I was diagnosed unofficially by a friend who works as a criminal psychologist. He seemed to find it fascinating how stereotypical I was.

Big Clive

Sometimes an image search helps locate it. But it might be a proprietary marking.

Big Clive

You could tame the charge current down a bit. I often see a diode in series with the supply to these chips, possibly to lop off between 0.6-1V from the voltage the chip has to drop.

Big Clive

If you search for (slow flash LED) on eBay or aliexpress, there should be an assortment.

Russell Levine

Do you have a link where I can get some of the slow flash LEDs?

Dennis Smith

"Why do my Patreon notifications only arrive /after/ the stream?" -.-

WooShell

You only need to know the right resistor value and voltage rating, and obviously the power rating.

Frank

a) the infrastructure is not made for that.

Frank

Mandatory safety features prevent this.

Frank

Wotcha - Couple of simple mod you can do for the Q5 is to add braces to the main support columns and adding dampeners to the rods. For more info on what you need to do, have a read of this - https://www.fastblinker.com/a-couple-of-mods-to-my-q5/

Rik Kershaw-Moore

Talk about how weird RF is :)

Steve Brace

There is only one way to find out.

Frank

I love through hole for repairability. Old electronic music instruments would not be repairable when all was made using SMD components.

Frank

It applies to AC, alternating current. A power factor of 1.00 is when the current draw follows the sine wave perfectly, like with a resistive load. All other cases where the current does not follow the sine wave as well the power factor is lower, like with inductive loads or capacitive loads.

Frank

A RC low pass filter should do the job.

Frank

Hi Clive. Have you done any upgrades on your 3d printer (Just bought a Flsun q5) and was looking for some easy fixes

Tim Pearson

can a super computer cause an epileptic seizure?

Craig Matthews

Will Healthy Papa be back with advice for the cold season this year?

so i work at a theatrical lighting company but i really dont know how the movers or the dmx splitters/universes/relays etc work. would you be willing to explain a few of them and possibly do a teardown and schematic of a couple of the more ubiquitous units

Palerider1942

How does my NoCo battery charger de-sulfate and/or repair a battery?

Jason Greene

Define weird and pervy

Azam

Talk about wireless LEDs.

Crow T.

Need two set's of screwdrivers...

Frank

Hi Clive! Hope you are doing well! What did you think of Veritasium's video on Poynting vectors (I think it was called "everybody has got electricity wrong", or something like that.)

CrouchingTigerHiddenAdam

3: look up old Sunbeam mixers... they used a mechanical governor to regulate the mixing speed, and a capacitor/resistor arrangement that was supposed to even out the spikes? The resistor is a big ceramic thing that looks handmade haha. I'm trying to fix/upgrade one, and I don't know if I can find the resistor in any other form than old salvaged originals people are selling...

Vernon Zimmerman

Pozidrive or Philips screws, your preference?

electronbox

I have a trip to ( South- ) Africa coming up and have a big stack of power banks in order to combat the power cuts or load-shedding as they call it. How is your experience with the power grid on the IOM? In NL everything is ridiculously stable. Now I think of it, we are actually very vulnerable in Western Europe because we are not prepared to deal with a long lasting or frequent power cut(s).

Frank

I have a commercially made joule thief in the form of a face with LEDs for "eyes". The twist is they flash and run for weeks on an old battery. It has a blob chip, and an electrolytic cap visible. Any ideas on how to make a flashing output, long lasting joule thief?

Kevin Hardisty

An automatic changeover switch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=babtv00R-Nc

Frank

This is indeed our future big headache in managing cables.

Frank

2: I work in QC (me and my philosophy degree), and I wonder what exposure you had to that in the past? Arbitrary red-tape kind of QC? Not sure if you would have worked in manufacturing and interacted with QC or not.

Vernon Zimmerman

P.s. I'm starting to build a 10x10x10 supercomputer cube. Wish me luck.

What is the most difficult concept in electronics that you've ever had to learn, and what helped you finally understand it?

Do you ever marvel at anything within 'YANKO DESIGN'?

Andrew Donaldson

Although I'm sure you have had this question a 1000 times, if you could spend a day with someone (not family/friend etc) living or dead who would it be

Neil Tonks

You measurement is without a load attached. This is called capitative coupling. Given everything is wired up correctly. It is very low current, but it would be enough to dimly light up a LED light. Some of them have a special resistor inside to function as a load to prevent this kind of ghosting voltages.

Frank

1: You mentioned in a stream about UV lamps being put in old dryers to generate ions to freshen the laundry? I don't quite understand, but I plan to do that or put an ionizer in there, because my clothes come out smelling like cat litter and mold.

Vernon Zimmerman

Ive wondered what peoples thoughts are on the reliabality of SMD components compared to through hole. For example, Im building a project where it is a SuperCapacitor storage and auto shutdown for a RaspberryPi. I didnt design it, bu the person that did used 805 smd sized components. I cant see how these components can supply a high current (2amp). How can an 805 size Resistor be 1/4 watt. Sure, for Mouse's supercomputer, that size is fine.. Ive been in Electronics for 45 years and seen the change (still prefer though hole, even if the size of the PCB will be large)

Till date, what is the worst device from China that you have cracked open, safety wise and design wise?

What is power factor? I hear about this sometimes but I have absolutely no idea what it is or does.

Immit81

I want to replace a potentiometer on an existing product with a 1khz PWM signal from a different power source. I plan to replace the pot with an optocoupler using a capacitor & bleed resistor for smoothing. I feel like I'm overlooking something obvious. Since that feeling usually ends up in smoke I welcome your input.

Bill Kerr

Have you done any single-perimeter 3d printing experiments other than those crystal lights? I made a planter with mine and it's holding up nicely!

I have an inverter running from a leasure battery powering my central heating pump during power cuts. I currently switch power over manually whenever needed, is there a way to make this happen automatically? 240 v supply

I have had quite a few mains powered capacitive dropper devices fail over the years compared to devices with a transformer. Due you think capacitive droppers are less reliable by design, or its due to poor quality capacitors / workmanship, or something else?

John Russell

He was forced to read by tungsten lighting :D (Or worse, CCFL energy saver lamps!)

Dave Matthews

Or Ralphy with his hat on of course he needs some dignity

Sorry I won't make tonight have a team night out

Tazz1669

What is it with your obsession with cheap Poundland LED lighting? Were you denied lighting as a child? If so, that would explain a lot, but you did turn out O.K., kind of. 🀣 As far as me turning out O.K., not so much. πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Ever thought of making 3D LED cubes as perhaps the next progression from the LED supercomputers.

John Russell

a) Thoughts on mass EV charging from existing lamp posts - can the distribution take it? b) Street charging pads - is the near field of a 85 kHz at 55 kW inductive pad safe? https://youtu.be/aq7SP18sPKw

Mr B Shepherd

In simple terms can you you explain what is active and reactive power.

Steve Ryan

Can you explain how a solar panel system does not feed back in to the grid in the case of a power failure. What stops the solar system trying to back feed the grid.

Steve Ryan

Would be interesting to time how long it takes you to solder a certain small job, and then repeat it as the night goes on and more alcohol is consumed. Will it slow you down?

Andrew Crawford

Have you ever taken apart pet products such as the shock collar or automatic feeders? If so, learned anything interesting from them? Thanks from Florida, USA.

What exactly is an SCR controller and what is it used for?

Mike Hanley

Lead free solder. Do you use it for hand soldering? What about solder paste / heat gun for SMD? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do that - any reason? Best PCB layout software and why it’s Sprint Layout. Tell us about your worst work related injuries. I have a feeling you’ve had a few. If you had a million pounds to spend on equipment, components etc what would you buy? Did you have a chemistry set as a boy? What do you think about them all being safe and boring now? Would you drive a nuclear powered car?

Andrew Crawford

what about the trend to No Code programming - Scratch No-Code etc.. just move bits about on a screen ? MIT's App coding too

Who is your engineering heroes Brunel, Trevithick, Magnus Pike for example. You should do a call out to out everyone's hero in chat.

N. Shaun Tremayne

Do you intend to look for another workshop locally or maybe in Glasgow?

Do you have a formal diagnosis of autism, or is it that you β€œidentify” with the characteristics that come with being on the spectrum? Cheers, from a fellow neuro-non-typical.

Nic Higham

What are your thoughts on USB C and not all USB C cables being compatible with all USBC devices. (USBc to USBc I'm talking about) Anker cables charge my iPad at 15v 1.5A but generic cables either don't charge at all or at reduced rate. Nightmare trying to get cables that work at all or higher rates. Cheers.

Do you use only Google search as it is filtering more or use Duck Duck go?

N. Shaun Tremayne

Can you provide any more stories / behind the scenes insight from your work on Military Tattoo?

An overview of EMC considerations in pcb design and design in general.

Have you ever been to a Mensa meeting, apparently the protocol is place the magazine on the table to identify yourself but it is not the done thing to discuss IQ there?

In my house, with the light switch turned off, i still measure about 90 to 100 volts on the socket. What could cause that? Should i be worried?

devttyUSB0

Are you diagnosed formally as autistic? I have just been formally diagnosed at 36, it all makes sense now

1 How big is the woofler going to be that Mouse gives his old stepson? 2 Have you ever wanted to go to Chernobyl to see the soviet electronics???

talk about you making music with synths

Will you be live streaming on Christmas day and are you planning to electro-fork the Christmas pudding? Or hot dogger the pigs in blankets?

How do you find out about ICs when a straight Google search returns nothing? I'm trying to track down a 5 pin chip labelled KV6VG and am out of ideas.

Steve Pritchard

Can you do an ABC live tap into a domestic meter tail to put in an extra consumer unit? Seems a lot easier than Henley Blocks and having the supply fuse pulled.

Angus McLean

What have been your all time favourite electronics books and publications over the years, and did any particular one fuel your interest?

Brendan Perkins

What is the easiest way to signal from one floor to another (toggle red to green led) with no wires or Wi-Fi? Yes, I can text, yes I can use IOT devices, but i am trying to create a mini project for my daughter. I want to toggle a switch on one floor to toggle the leds on another. What is the most FUN and educational way to do this?

Simon York

🀣 weird and pervy!! How can I stop tp-4056 getting so hot?It melted the hot glue holding it in place.I’ve heard about a resistor being added to the chip to lower the current?

Mick Spanner

since the workshop thing didn't happen, is it more likely you'll return to Glasgow?

Juraj

Do you like Haggis and other traditional scottish dishes? I've gathered you like porridge.

I've been playing a lot with power banks lately and the one I'm working with now uses the IP5306. I know thats the one that was in your 4,000mAh bank. From your experiences which of these chips do you prefer and which were substandard? You've opened a lot of these so Id be curious.

D

Hutcie is always a good subject, Xmas lights are a quite timely subject and I would like to know what your favourite tools / circuits / grown up toys are 😎

Lee Goodair

What was the most challenging but ultimately simplest fix that you can remember?

Eric Weimar

Have you been playing around with any wireless charging tech and do you think we might just have completely wireless houses in the future?

Ross Clarkson
