Glasgow light teardown

I'm not sure if they still do lights like this at Lidl.  But here's a teardown of one.

I'm missing the big glossy PCB pictures here.

Remember there's a weekend live stream.

Ooh I like the improvised current source! I'm guessing the lower 300R soaks up a bit of power to prevent the 78L05 overheating. I don't think they have thermal shutdown unlike modern regulators. Taken together, quite a curate's egg. Yes more optimization is possible but any design in production making money is better than one that's not ready yet. One other thought about the PTC is: it fits the space where a normal fuse may not.

Both Aldi and Lidl seem to employ their Germanic ideology to their products, in that they will be well made and acceptable to the German expectation of good quality- whilst maintaining a reasonable price bracket compared to say ... British ideology of erm that'll do 'em and fuck 'em if it breaks, which is why Aldi keeps getting voted Top in surveys in the UK ! (we do 99% of our shop there now, since they opened 1 mile from Tesco)

A bit over-engineered but that's a good thing. Have found Livarno products to be fairly good quality.

I found this video most illuminating 😁

A strange configuration for the voltage regulator linking the output to GND via a 300R resistor. I shall have to go away and have a think about that. Could nothing be done at the mains side to increase the potential life of the LEDs?
