High voltage ignitor/igniter unit
Added 2022-10-13 04:27:32 +0000 UTC
I appear to be making a video almost every day at the moment. I'll have to tame things down to avoid having a huge delay between videos being made and released on YouTube at the usual schedule of one every two days.
This was a pretty cool unit. Very sparky and poppy, but with very simple circuitry.

The resistors will limit the current and it will reset when the capacitor has discharged and the mains waveform passes the zero crossing point.

Won't the sidac shunting also cause a huge current on the AC side (through the shunt)?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. The bottle had leaked over time, creating a mound of gooey resin.

Only 1/2 fill the bottles, I use the same bottle for sewing machine oil, providing it is not nose down it will not leak. (time slot 4.27)

Yes, but rated for much higher current and with selectable trigger voltage.

It probably does. I should really stop grinding and dremeling stuff at the bench. I managed to cover everything in the vicinity with Tesla-dust from the headlight video.

Unless the sausage were in an explosive atmosphere. Sounds like fun. How many joules to cook a sausage to perfection I wonder?

Is a SIDAC the same as / similar to a DIAC, as typically used in TRIAC trigger circuits ?

The power output is miniscule. Nothing would happen to the sausage.

The neon was probably being used as a charge threshold detector to trigger a thyristor.

There's no real way to opt out, but you can ignore the live stream posts and not view the streams.

I enjoy the devices and teardowns - they're very informative. But I would like to opt out of the live streams - not really interested. Is there a way to opt out? Thanks!

The ancient gas boiler in my old house used a neon in some kind of relaxation oscillator
circuit to produce the sparks.

Please repeat the spark test but lay a sausage along the wires first.

Keep making the vids as you find natural; if there are too many, you can keep some back for releasing at times when you want a bit of 'me' time.

I have wondered how the cooker managed to spark everything at the same time- very interesting bit of kit.
