Delightfully trashy granny-zapper

Given that this style of circuitry used to be widely used in hideous coiled-wire sculpture lights favoured by elderly ladies, I do wonder how many got zapped by them before they switched to using low voltage light strings.

I really enjoyed reverse engineering this one. It's pleasingly functional for such a trashy design.

One update (more in the description on YouTube) the unit does NOT use phase angle control. It just pulse width modulates the LEDs on the unsmoothed DC.

Hand / slave assembled!

Yeah it's odd. 1N4148 came to my mind too, but it wouldn't make sense in the circuit there.

i'm curious about the "4148" silkscreen next to one of the resistors. that would seem to suggest a diode .. but while other components have symbols printed as well as values that one does not?

Not a single surface mount in sight- good old fashioned circuitry.
