Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Coming right from The Intern, I felt in the best mood to revisit the beginning of these SW prequels. Truly lovin enjoying the discovery part of the reactions for how this or that is connected in the story. Even if it's in this retrospective creation. I've never been a huge fan of the science explanation added for the force. Happy to overlook the fact that midi-chlorians were nowhere to be heard in Obi-Wan's description in the future. They needed to now go down a path of answering questions that hadn't been written in stone when they began. So tack on an answer that 1999's audience would now welcome. Let's further science up the previously given explanation. Not terrible, but a device to let us know where on the power scale Anakin is. You have to love a chosen one and prophecy lore. The future, of potentially the most powerful one of us we know, is unclear. So we are rightly very cautious. Sensible Jedi thinking. We are aware it's not overly convenient he's now here, what with the sudden appearance of a foe that's been long forgotten. The vaguity of any great prophecy is truly key here. The not knowing if this mythology is more figuratively complex than any of these big meditative thinkers are able to see. First, it's too of an unknown of a path to go down. Then it's suddenly a reluctant yes, for a reason I couldn't quite fathom. Other than the plot needed it to happen. Reductive storytelling 101. But..... They could bring 'balance' to the force. But surely balance could mean equal parts light and dark in an oncoming war for the galaxy. We already know Anakin's path and ultimate fate. This first step on that journey, for me, could have been written better. Especially for the other players in the story.

Darth Maul has been my sister's favorite since she was 5 when this movie came out xD.

Only one game: Knights of the Old Republic, and I'm still in the process of completing it! I am eager to form my own opinions of all of the movies! Thanks for coming along on the journey.

I don't remember for sure but I think when you started down this Star Wars rabbit hole several weeks ago you said you had played a couple(?) of Star Wars themed games but you had never actually seen any of the movies. Please don't listen to the "fundamentalists" who all say the "sequel" trilogy films are all HORRIBLE. I have been a Star Wars fan ever since I was the assistant manager of a double screen movie theater back in 1980 and stood inside the double doors of Theater Suite I for the last 10 minutes of EVERY showing of Episode V The Empire Strikes Back during the evening shift during its initial theatrical run. I love EVERYTHING about the final trilogy. Especially the loving care and respect in which the entire cast, crew, and producers of Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker paid tribute to the passing of Carrie Fisher 9 months before the filming of the final episode in the Skywalker Saga began.

David W Richards

This was great, thank you! Can't wait to watch along on the next two!
