Breaking Bad: Ozymandias [5x14] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Comments

Yes, there's a few folks watching it for the first time! It's a lot of fun. And I haven't watched any reactions yet, but I will be because PHEW.

Ah, seems there's some other people watching this for the first time! Excellent! Another fun fact: When Ozymandias first aired, there were a number of professional critics who came out to say that their normal routine is to watch an episode twice before they write about it, just so they have their facts and thoughts straight. And with this episode, they couldn't do it -- they weren't emotionally prepared to re-experience all that before their article would be due. And there have been a few reactors on YouTube who couldn't process it, either. The show cuts to black, and then the reactor just stares into space for a bit before they look at the camera and say something like, "Yeah, uh... I can't... I.... I'll see you next time..." That's when you know a show hits HARD.

Also, something I noticed when watching other people’s reaction to this episode, was that Walt was actually…. covering for skyler on that last phone call? Also love the parallel between both Gus and Walt falling to the floor with the exact same camera movements, that’s some damn good storytelling right there

Man what the hell this show is literally going to kill me. Two episodes to go and I am going insane. I am not okay. This show owes me financial compensation for emotional damage. What in the world.

The pants being there is an amazing little detail, definitely missed that!

Fun Facts: When Walt was rolling the barrel across the desert he rolled right on by his tan pants that flew off the RV in the very first opening scene. When you rewatch the series take notice of the color of Walt's shirts there is a pattern of his behavior and the color he's wearing. Remember the saying snitches get stitches and Jesse is earning his. (That comment going to get me in trouble)

Kaiielle has blessed us with an early release 😭

Definitely worth a re-watch of just that scene to catch all the emotional changes in the characters during that conversation. It makes more sense that Walt is crying while his voice portrays something different, and why Skyler's demeanor changes when she catches on. She starts agreeing with him, saying, "You're right". She's confirming for him that she's picking up his message. So he's relieved and he goes back into the rest of his prepared routine. Such a fucked up final(?) conversation between two spouses.

Dan

You put that so well and I completely agree!

kaiielle

Thanks for the fun facts! I looked up the baby thing. How awesome that Bryan just kept acting the part.

kaiielle

You talked a lot about how this episode really sucks to experience (in the best way)... and I have to agree. So many other shows would have pulled a couple punches and let Walt (or someone!, anyone!) off easy. This show actually has the guts to kill a beloved character like Hank off, and *then* proceed to expose you to 12 *more* horrible things in the same episode -- the total fruition of 5 seasons of illegal behavior. Not a single soft blow to anybody. Especially the audience, who repeatedly takes the liver shot (from the dramatic irony) of knowing Hank is dead while his beloved wife keeps mentioning his name in future tense because she doesn't even know she's already a widow. Bam, bam, bam. All crammed into 40 minutes.

Gonna throw out the same trivia a lot of people do. The baby saying "mama" wasn't planned, one of those happy accidents. And the dog that crossed the street at the end was adopted by Bob Odenkirk if my memory serves me. The hammer was always gonna come down, it was just a question of how. The network knew what they had going into the last eight episodes too. The big promo for these eight episodes was Bryan Cranston reading the poem "Ozymandias."

Brian Settles

I don't think you caught on, but Walt's phone call with Skyler was him trying to take credit for everything and make Skyler a blameless victim.
