Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: S.O.S. [2x21 + 2x22] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Happy Friday everyone! Here's the finale for Season 2! What a WILD ending to this season. Definitely my favourite season of the two so far. What a ride! [Direct link here.]

As a reminder, I'll be watching Jessica Jones S1 next, followed by Daredevil S2, then Luke Cage S1 before circling back around to Season 3 of AOS. If you are someone only here for AOS and will be leaving until I resume, make sure to stay on as a free member here on Patreon so you can keep up-to-date on where I'm at through my update posts.

I can't WAIT to read your comments about this! Thanks so much for being along for this adventure. I appreciate you all so much!

Have a great weekend!

Thank you so much! I appreciate knowing which moments of my own reactions people love haha.

kaiielle

I love this breakdown of Ward, thank you!

kaiielle

Thanks for all of your thoughts, I appreciate it! JJ will be a lot of fun.

kaiielle

LOL I can be a *way* if I am crossed, that's for sure. I just had to laugh because of the karma to Ward, that's all.

kaiielle

Def excited for the variety in the "feel" of these shows! It's going to be a good time!

kaiielle

Yes, I'm really excited to pay closer attention to all of Raina's scenes on a rewatch!

kaiielle

Aww that "stand with Ward" thing is very cute. Yes, streaming definitely changed the landscape for shows, that's for sure. Thanks for sharing all your thoughts with me!

kaiielle

So many crazy things in this finale!

kaiielle

My love of Coulson from the films meant I was probably going to enjoy this show no matter what. 😂

kaiielle

I'm actually not gonna say much about the episodes this time, but I'll talk about your expressions and reactions that were priceless. First the Giddy cackle of haha ward shot his girlfriend instantly followed by the omg is Bobbi okay look, due to the fact the show gave virtually no time between those 2 scenes for the shock value. Then the man I can't wait to see Raina I'm liking her... wtf NOOO! And the semi sad and relief look of being glad the Jaying was dead but could still see the sadness in your eyes and face watching Cal holding her as she died. Plus all the other expressions from the Fitz and Simmons interations of almost getting together to all the goofy moments its what makes your reactions great ! Poor Gemma lost for now... such a killer way to end the season I think back in the day it was probably 5-6 months before the next season came out maybe a year who knows lol

I forgot to talk Ward and his arc. The writers were very aware of how much fans wanted him to be redeemed no matter what he did to not deserve it. They confirmed that he did shoot buddy his dog because some fans were convinced it was Garrett. Like a comment above has said Kara is the embodiment of that desire. She became Ward's Ward. Just like how Garrett did all those horrible things and Ward stood by him. Now I love Ward's character arc because it is just like Walt from breaking bad. It is a negative character arc. He didn't get better. He is worse and has become Garrett in this story. Being shot and Kara helping him is just like him helping Garrett last season when his life was on the line. Now Ward is on the path of becoming a leader of hydra. Now the story chose Bobbi as the one to confront Ward because she played his role on our team this season. She is his mirror. She was the shield agent that "betrayed" us but she didn't go against her organization like he did.

Love this season and just how much changes happen to our characters. I spoke about our team last week and their changes but I left out Coulson because I wanted to talk about everything with him at once. Leadership is a very tough position and this season we had many different leaders. Whitehall and list as "heads" of hydra, Gonzalez with real shield, Jiaying with the afterlife and Coulson and his team. The way a leader acts is pivotal to how a team functions. Coulson learned some things from Gonzales and Jiaying sadly learned from Whitehall. Coulson hid so many things from his team this season because he thought he had to control everything. After everything with real shield he realized just how important trusting his team to help him was, like giving Daisy her own project and letting Mack deal with the aliens threats. Learning to take advice and help from your team is a big step. We talked about how shield has been influenced by Hydra after the trauma caused by their attack. Sadly Jiaying's suffering while understandable made her exactly like Whitehall. She created a weapon out of the diviners and was going to use it against shield and the rest of the world so they could take control of everyone. You can see the parallel with her attacking the boat like hydra did in 2x15. Fitzsimmons have moved forward. Fitz finishing Hunter's sentences while funny also shows that he has gotten better basically all the way. The show loves irony and Simmons out of everyone wanted to take extra safety precautions this season when dealing with alien objects. Once she gained her natural curiosity back (asking Mack to put a probe to see more) she gets swallowed by this fricken black thing. I will definitely stick around for Jessica Jones.

Great reaction 😀😀😀I bet it was a crazy feeling when Bobbie got shot. Then Ward shot his honey. Then you started laughing. Dam girl I didn’t realize how cold blooded🩸 you are. Remind me never to double cross you. 😜😜

And that's a wrap on season 2! Here are a couple of notes I took: Fitz finishing Hunter's sentences as a nice bookend to not being able to finish sentences at the start of the season (due to his aphasia) really underlines how much he's improved. I 100% agree Mack's screentime was very much lacking compared to the other new additions to the team. I love how he gives everyone nicknames though! The duplicating redhead (the Ginger Ninjas as Mack calls them) are played by Alicia Vela-Bailey, who is actually primarily a stunt woman. She doubles Adrianne Palicki (Bobbi Morse) in the show as well. At the start of E22 the battering ram from CA:Winter Soldier makes another appearance, as Coulson uses it to keep Mr. Hyde in his place so they can have a chat in the garage. Cal has said "I wanted to put my family back together" a fair number of times this season. It's got a lot darker of a connotation with him telling the story of literally sowing his wife back together after finding her in pieces. Skye quaking her mom so hard she started to come apart at the seams/scars was pretty gnarly imagery. For the season overall you mentioned appreciating the balance of comedy/lightheartedness and the intensity/action of this show. To me it feels very similar to the first Avengers movie (which this show was originally built on the back of). The MCU has gone all sorts of different directions since then, but AoS has always kept that original balance and I really dig it! -=- I'm looking forward to rewatching Jessica Jones with you! It's been a long time since I've seen that. Just like Daredevil, it's a lot darker than AoS, so it'll be a good change of pace for you, I think. You said you expect a narrative time jump between AoS S2 and S3, so a bit of a break between watching those IRL will probably feel right.

I agree that it was probably Cal's choice, especially since Coulson has such problems with the TAHITI program that he would've definitely given Cal the choice of that and being able to still do good as a doctor and Daisy would still come visit him from time to time, even if he doesn't remember her.

I remember that when this came out, people who'd read the SHIELD comics saw the thing they knew about before. When she got her powers, they suspected. They were trying to guess if Skye was someone from the comics and when they/she found out her full name, Daisy Johnson, they were all excited 'cause they knew exactly who she was. I did not know at the time. But, they were saying that her dad in the comics is Mr. Hyde, and this is where we get to see Mr. Hyde. I know he's a villain in the comics and I love how they sort of redeem him here that all the horrible stuff he had done, including make himself into a monster, was at Jaiying's behest in the service of getting their daughter back that was stolen from them. Makes me tear up every time, his goodbye with Daisy where he says there was only one "Best Day Ever" and that was her birthdate. Right when you said that you're liking Raina more and more is what I said also and then as SOON as she was killed, I thought back on all the stuff she did and had a lot more respect for her because it all made sense. She was never evil, she was never WITH HYDRA. Sure, she manipulated people and some of them died, but the ironic thing is that I couldn't think of a single instance where she lied. She'd sometimes tell partial truths in order to sway someone to a certain direction, but she never lied and it's interesting how none of us trusted what she said. She had a single agenda the whole time, to find out what she would become. What her destiny was and when she finally realized it, she was content with it, even though it meant she would die because of it. Interestingly, she acted solely in service of that single-minded agenda to the ignorance of everyone else and therefore was selfish, but once she got that answer, she became self-less. I love her over all story arc.

LOVED Twin Peaks, but I didn't finish the return series. Always meant to get back to it. I think I first saw him in David Lynch's Dune, but then Twin Peaks. Maybe the movie "The Hidden" was 2nd. I can't recall, but I've loved him in everything I've seen him in. The cast of Fallout kept singing his praises.

Thadman

I believe it was Cal’s choice to go through the Tahiti protocol. And he knew it was goodbye but still wanted Daisy to check up on him. You and Grant Ward will be waiting on closure for a while from this finale 😂 LFG Jessica Jones 🙌🏽 One last thing, “Skye”/Daisy Johnson’s theme is usually subdued but I love it so much. Every time I hear it, chills.

Kaiielle since you mentioned wanting to watch things that Kyle MacLachlan (Cal) has starred in, I would be remiss to not suggest Twin Peaks. I believe it was one of his first big roles. It's a somewhat short TV series, and is what I would call the epitome of a quirky yet intriguing cult classic. I know it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but I would love to see your reaction to it. Maybe you could check out the pilot someday and see if it's something that catches your interest.

Whilst I'm looking forward to Jessica Jones S1 (which I don't think I've watched since it came out) and Daredevil S2, I'm definitely a little sad that it will be quite a while before there's more AoS. Doing some quick mental maths, I think you'll have a longer gap between seasons than we did when it first aired! At least you'll get the full "what happened to Simmons?" experience 😉 Anyway, about this finale - the two parts did air back-to-back (hence no tag for Part 1), so you are correct in treating it as a single thing. It's definitely a more "epic" finale than S1, but that makes sense - S1 was effectively wrapping up an arc that only began with 1x17, whereas this finale has to wrap up threads from the entire season. I really enjoy Cal - he's such an interesting character, and his story is so tragic once you get the complete picture. I always find his goodbye to Skye - in particular his "No. Just one" - really emotional. After losing everything I'm OK with him being put through the TAHITI protocol and getting a new life, where he can be closer to what he was presumably like before Skye was born. It's interesting that you noted straight away that Hunter wasn't anywhere near Bobbi to begin with - I've found that most reactors get stressed out with every door, which gives me a chuckle since the first one in particular has a window and opens the wrong way! The Fitz fake-out also gets everyone, so don't be concerned about that. Ward accidentally shooting and killing Kara feels like a nice bit of poetic justice for how he's moulded her into someone like him - though it doesn't seem like it's going to lead anywhere good with him seemingly taking over what's left of Hydra. Something else that I've seen from a few reactors is the idea that Coulson would be unaffected by the Diviner metal laced in the Terrigen crystals due to the GH325 in his blood - which IIRC you theorised as well in a previous reaction. TBH, this was never something that ever occurred to me - given GH325 didn't affect Skye in any way, it always seemed pretty clear to me that he was still just a human - but the crystal starting to turn him to stone gives us outright confirmation of that. Fortunately Mack was there to cut of his hand! Which incidentally is a parallel to the first episode of the season, where Hunter cut off Hartley's hand to save her (though it didn't really work out that time) Your comment about the show being written as it aired - whilst the big season arcs were well planned out, there are definitely aspects of that as there are specific things from the fans that did get incorporated. One fun little reference is Kara saying "I will always stand with Ward" - "I stand with Ward" came directly from a particular group of fans, who believed Ward was still a good guy, just misunderstood. As for the shows not being written like that any longer, I feel that's more a product of a lot of "big" shows being made for streaming, not for a network - I think network shows are probably still written like that, but shows made for streaming as a first instance are much more likely to be done in their entirety before release. Overall, I do find I prefer the former, but I'm not necessarily convinced it's down to how they are made - rather, I think it's more to do with what appears to be a lack of understanding of how movies and television aren't the same medium and need to be treated differently. The Disney+ MCU shows in particular suffer from this IMO (although they certainly aren't alone in this) - many of them just feel like overly long movies, with movie style plots and pacing. The extra time that a television series affords for things like deeper character development and those little extra moments that could never be justified in a two-hour movie often tends to be wasted, and the discipline that would be there if making a movie often doesn't feel like it's applied either. OK, I think that's long enough for now!

It just gets better from here... Okay. So, favorite things: Phil, Fitz, and Mack vs. Gordon..."I'm the guy who kills Gordon."...well, no, but...; plus, as a bonus, Mack cuts off Phil's hand (WTF!?); Ward accidentally killing Kara, while Bobbi takes a bullet for Hunter (great symmetry there); Skye being the bad-ass she is; Cal killing Jiaying to save his daughter; Skye saying goodbye to Cal, even though he doesn't remember her. And then there's Gemma...can't wait for season 3, but greatly looking forward to Jessica Jones (another of my favorites).

Totes excited for JJ, LC, and more DD!!! Woohoo! 👏🏼 Edit: glad you seem to be enjoying this show. It was never my cup of tea, but I know many around these parts really dig it and your reactions. 😉
