What questions do you have for the curator of a zoological museum?

The next podcast guest will be Dr. Angela Hornsby, curator of the Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum at the University of Montana! Her primary areas of interest are small mammal biogeography and evolution, with emphasis on North American woodrats (Neotoma).

Leave a comment with questions you'd like Kallie and Angela to discuss!

Have you ever considered small mammal fossil preparations besides their modern taxidermied descendants? Or are small mammal fossils too rare for that to be practical.

Does your university have any collections? If so reach out to the currator(s) and ask to intern or work or volunteer. That's what I did at the herbarium at my undergrad school and I was able to take over a bunch of curatorial duties and even got paid for it.

How is digitization for zoological collections going? I work in botanical collections and it seems most large institutions have made significant progress photographing specimens and putting them online. Can the same be said for zoological collections?

The woodrat microbiome is an interesting study in how gut microbes process dietary toxins, but do you think it's possible to use the feces from middens to look at how the their gut microbiota change over time?

Assuming wood rats aren't originally native to the Americas (I may be entirely wrong) is there any way to measure their impact on native species before their introduction? And more broadly is there any way to tell if a species was invasive at a point before recorded history?

Since you study Pack rats, so one what's the most surprising thing you found in an prehistoric pack rat nest, second do people consider you a pack rat?

Are we currently in the midst of the sixth mass extinction? There seems to be mixed opinions among biologists that we are. Thanks!

What is a good path to getting a career in museum collections or curating? I’m currently an undergrad majoring in general biology, and it’s been a dream of mine to work in collections so any advice regarding working in museums is appreciated
