“Was he [Charlie] doing amazing in school before?” Actually… yes. It’s mentioned a few times in season 1 that Charlie is very good at school, and much more of a school nerd than Nick is (he even, despite being a year below Nick, tries to help him with his homework). And at the beginning of the episode, his teacher mentions that “Charlie’s always been a high achiever.” Which may be partly why his teachers and parents are being so hard on him - when a good student starts drastically slipping, nobody wants to see that happen. Whereas with a student who always gets “solid” grades like Nick, if they keep that up nobody is going to sound any alarms. With that in mind - it’s definitely interesting that Charlie is the one who is doing poorly in school, and it’s arguably a bigger deal than if Nick were the one who was getting distracted.

I agree that this is a more stressful episode than usual, and at first I was concerned by that, but I had faith in Alice that the show wouldn’t go too far in that direction. And I do love the two happier scenes, first, the one with Charlie and Nick in the park with Millie, and secondly, the one between Tao and his mother, who is really a lovely character. I think that second scene helps explain Tao’s abandonment issues, knowing that his father died when he was much younger. I think both Joe and Kit, along with the rest of the cast, do an excellent job of making their characters feel very real, and both of them are particularly good at expressing emotion without needing words to do so.
