On the Podcast for the show, they have often talked about how, in little ways, they tried to show that Micheal does have a heart, and that he was actually a good sales person. They didn't want to do it too much, but enough so he is not just some one dimensional character. When you get to the end of this season, you should look up Season 2 bloopers because they really struggled to get through this episode - especially the interviews with Dwight.
