2025-09-23 04:59:46 +0000 UTCAs others have mentioned, Jennifer Holliday originated the role of Effie on broadway. I know J Hud’s performance of “I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” is legendary, but I have always preferred Jennifer Holliday’s. Probably because I grew up on her version. If you haven’t seen it, this is the link to her performance at the Tony’s https://youtu.be/sWHazOyRQJY?si=9q94UqE2PBA5sblh

2025-09-21 09:41:56 +0000 UTCNot Jim and the Trinity killer.... 😂😂😂😂 I haven't seen this movie since it was in theaters, and I would have been like 12 or 13. Fun to watch it again. J Hud did win an Oscar for her performance in this. And a couple golden globes, I think. Definitely deserved it. That lady with the high pitched speaking voice will forever be the blackmail lady from Being Mary Jane to me. Lol I would love love love for you to watch Prince's Sign O the Times concert film at some point. They just showed it in IMAX a couple weeks ago, and it was so phenomenal on the big screen. Will make you fall even more in love with Prince. I think you've seen the performance of If I Was Your Girlfriend from this film.

2025-09-21 00:58:49 +0000 UTCThis was 2 years after American Idol, Simon Cowell told her she was out of her depth on the show. He gave a public apology to her after. This was the one that made people sit up to Jennifer Hudson. Jennifer Holliday left some MASSIVE shoes to fill. That woman's voice still gets me. Hudson did her thang. The movie was a hit, deservedly so. I love me some musicals. You should check out Madonna in Evita. She ate the hell out of that role.

2025-09-21 00:56:23 +0000 UTCA couple of years before this movie, Jennifer Hudson was on American Idol. She had a great voice there and was a finalist, finishing 7th. Her character was inspired by Florence Ballard, who, off and on, was on The Supremes. Beyoncé's character was, of course, inspired by Diana Ross. Ross had a long-time fling with Barry Gordy, who founded Motown Records. This movie sure does showcase some common themes in the music industry back then (and today?) such as the big shots valuing marketing over talent.
