Yeah as others have said, the movie was made late 70's, but the play was on stage in the 60's during the war. I was a kid during the war, and graduated high school soon after it ended. Vietnam affected us all even as kids. Some of the actors went on to have famous careers. John Savage was in The Deer Hunter another Vietnam themed movie, The Onion Field, and The Amateur. Treat Williams was in Once upon a Time in America, and Prince of the City. Beverly DeAngelo was in all the "Vacation" movies. Three songs stand out to me as stand alone hits, Hair by the Cowsills, Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine by the 5th Dimension and Good Morning Starshine by The Strawberry Alarm Clock. Other musicals I would recommend from this time are Westside Story(there's a more current version, but not as good IMO), and Jesus Christ Superstar. Also since you like the Beatles, Across the Universe is fun as a more modern musical.

I was seriously affected because I love the song but because of the tragedy of Berger of an otherwise uplifting film. I am still affected when I see this film. He was absolutely the representation of youth and full of life and it only dawned on me, years later, he represented so many young men that died in a senseless war in Vietnam. (Even though later on I joined the Air Force). Thank you for watching and bringing me (and others) along the journey. Peace out.
