Don't Lose Ur Head - Six The Musical | Unedited Reaction

Comments

While the OG West End version of this is good (the one you're listening to) I love the Broadway version, sung by Andrea Macasaet, she is HILARIOUS as Anne Boleyn

Carly Chapman

Anne Boleyn is a big deal because if he hadn't been so desperate for her, he never would have gotten divorced from his first wife of 20 years (much less had more wives), broken with the Catholic Church, or started the Church of England. She also was the mother of Elizabeth I, who despite Henry's obsessive desire for a son, would be the most successful and longest ruling offspring of Henry's to the point her reign was known as 'The Golden Age' - but the Tudor dynasty ended with her because after seeing her father's chaos, she refused to marry or have children. Anne's promises and yet 'inability' to give him a son sent her to death (on trumped up charges of witchcraft and infidelity including with her own brother) and him on a darker path. (Let's give it up, it was definitely his fault but gods forbid) She was very direct, spoke her mind (as this song parodied), was educated, and yes she refused to be the King's mistress. She wouldn't sleep with him unless he promised her marriage, and in terms she promised him the son Catherine could never give him. He took 7 years trying to convince the church to give him an annulment, then said screw it, got excommunicated, and started his own church for England. Catherine went to an nunnery to live out her days, and Anne showed up wearing yellow the day she died (to court, I believe, not her actual funeral) because finally she was Queen without Catherine hanging over her head - because there were plots to have her killed/removed and restore Catherine as the 'rightful queen'. Unfortunately corrupt parties in his government were meant to dissolve the monasteries and give the riches to the poor - instead they were seized for their own purposes, and some way Anne's anger about this and trying to nose into this situation was part of what caused her downfall. A woman who actually wanted a say in what was going on, and was out of favor with the king wasn't in a good place.

Yeah as someone who's hard of hearing, accurate CC is always loved

That’s 100% okay! I desperately wish I could afford to caption my videos with Casper but I cannot express enough how much more complicated it is when there are two voices going :/ But ALL of my Six content, and any other solo reactions, will be fully captioned moving forward!

Mortius

Fair response! I only checked videos with Casper in it! That's my bad!

Alcaria Swain

You might want to recheck any of my recent content that doesn’t feature Casper 👀 Part of me bringing on a second editor also involved me putting dedicated closed captions on all of my solo videos!!!!! (I’m still trying to figure out how to do it when there are two people, because that’s way more complicated 🙁) But if you look at my ex-wives reaction, or my underworld saga reactions, they are fully captioned!!!! And this video will be too!

Mortius

Okay, I'm sorry, but I need to call you out. You're making a big deal about animatics not having closed captions, but I feel like you're in a glass house throwing stones. Your work doesn't seem to have any captions either, other than autogenerated ones, and we know those are pretty useless most of the time. I understand you could make a case that it's more important for animatics than reaction channels, but I still feel like you should be captioning your work before you make more than a brief lament over another creator not having captions. I also feel like it's kinda not super great to throw your fans as a possible solution for captions and not your own time. It's much easier to other other's time than your own. I'm not mad or anything, but I want to put your complaints in perspective. Maybe reel back your captions crusade until you practice what you preach.

Alcaria Swain

I would definitely be careful with how much history you take from ex-wives. I love Anne Bolyenn, but she's probably the character with the most ahistorical presentation. She was actually really clever and mature, as far as my look into the historical figure was concerned.

Alcaria Swain

A good way to differentiate the ex-wives if they're not in their signature color (according to me): Catherine of Aragon has giant shoulder pads and a large crown Anne Boleyn (usually) has a two-piece dress and hair bumps Jane Seymour wears her hair down, has a small crown, and wears a longer skirt Anne of Cleves has a bob cut and wears shorts Katherine Howard wears a ponytail Catherine Parr wears her hair to the side and wears pants Hope this helps in the future!!

Historical context: Anne's family were pretty powerful in England where she was born- she was sent to France as a companion to Henry's sister, Mary, who married the French King and when she finally returned to England, many men admired and tried to court her. Her sister had actually been Henry's mistress(showing her father already trying to get ahead), but that fell apart so their father pushed Anne to the forefront as Catherine of Aragon's Lady-in-Waiting(hence the 'living with his wife' line; not as risque as this song says, but still heartbreaking as lady's-in-waiting are meant to be the queen's main support/servants, not their biggest betrayer). Henry grew interested in her, but she refused to become his mistress and share his bed without being promised marriage. Henry, meanwhile, desperately wanted a male heir, but all he had was Princess Mary from Catherine(and an illegitimate son, but he's not an option) so he wanted to get rid of her and marry someone else. He wrote to her and fell more and more in love. Anne herself was Protestant(while Catherine was Spanish Catholic) and her and her family were pushing for England to split from Catholicism. With the Pope constantly refusing Henry's request for a divorce, the tension broke. He married Anne and crowned her Queen anyway, she gave birth to Elizabeth, the future 'Virgin Queen', and he confirmed the split and created the Church of England. She was a queen of music and art(something her daughter Elizabeth shared in when she later became Shakespeare's Patron as Queen of England). Things soon fell apart, though, as Anne kept having miscarriage after miscarriage, leading to Henry growing frustrated as he had hoped for a male heir. The cycle repeated and he started looking for someone who could give him a son. There was a lot of unrest in England due to the split from Catholicism and many in court saw Anne as the main cause of all of this(of course, they couldn't blame and attack the king) and so they went after her with accusations of adultery and even accused her of treason against the king. Henry, having moved on from Anne and fallen for her lady-in-waiting, Jane Seymour, listened to their words instead of Anne's and so she was arrested and placed in the Tower of London. With so many in power against her, she was found guilty and sentenced to execution by beheading. Their marriage only lasted three years(even worse in comparison, their courtship lasted seven years...) It's truly a tragic story- Anne may have been the reason for England splitting from Catholicism, but it was King Henry who made the decision. She was just an easy scapegoat for all of them to attack in his place and so she truly 'paid the price with a swordman's swing'. While I love 'Don't Lose Your Head', this song in particular is the most historically inaccurate, painting Anne in a much different light than the one she truly was in in life...

In the outro, she's pretty much saying that she obviously won the whole competition with 'Don't Lose Your Head' and so was going to give the crowd an encore with that song about 'wearing yellow to a funeral', but everyone jumped in saying that it wasn't over and she hadn't won, then Jane Seymour stepped in asking if it was her turn to sing now.

Anne was pushed onto Henry as her dad wanted to be in a closer ring to the king. Her dad had actually sent Anne's sister 1st but she slept with Henry and Henry lost interest. Anne was actually quite clever and realized this so refused to sleep with him until they where married. The Catholic Church wouldn't grant divorce so he set up the church of england. Anne was involved already about not being under the Catholic church and had passed leaflets to Henry about this. The marriage divided england and there where rumours that Anne was a witch because she apparently had what is thought to be an extra finger. He then fell in love with Jane Seymour who was Anne's handmaiden. He needed to get rid of Anne and made the most of rumours she was sleeping with other men including her brother!!. She was sentenced to beheading, and held in the tower of London. She watched her brother be hung drawn and quartered. She had written to her brother about Henry not satisfying her and he leaked it to a carton about Henry not getting it up. Anne was given a time for her execution and prepared, a swordsman was sent from France and he was delayed. This happened a few times where a time was set and then he was delayed. Henry ordered all images of Anne to be destroyed Anne and Henry had one living child, a daughter who became Elizabeth the 1st.

I totally agree with you about the captions. As someone whose first language isn't even english, it's also difficult to understand some things... ^^' That's why I'm always grateful for them :/ But still, the song was fun :D I also liked it better than the one by Catherine of Aragon xD Looking forward to the next video!

Wolkenspringerin

Yes, just woke up only to find you reacting to my favourite Six song! Let's go!! 🤩

Volran

I forgot how lighthearted this show began. Before it hits you like a ton of emotional bricks. Mortius ain't ready. Nope, nope, nope. 😂

"The Church of England started so he wouldn't be beholden to the rules of the Catholic Church and the Pope"-- you nailed it!! Henry VIII's conflict with the Catholic Church was specifically about the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Anne Boleyn wouldn't become his mistress and refused to sleep with him until they were married, so he had to divorce Catherine to be with her. However, the Catholic Church was the only body that could approve an annulment and since Catherine wouldn't agree to it as she made clear in No Way, the essentially law suit dragged on for years. The Catholic Church actually ruled in Catherine's favor in the end, but by that point, Henry VIII had made a proclamation that made him the head of The Church in England, divorced Catherine, and married Anne which is why she is "the one who made History." ANYWAY, sorry that's a lot of historical context that you may or may not have wanted, I just couldn't help myself! Glad you're enjoying this musical, can't wait for you to get to Anne of Cleaves song, its my fav!! P.S. Anne Boleyn was actually a Lutheran and supported the Reformation which is what her line "Everybody chill, its totes God's will" may be referencing!

r0wann_

He says "You damned witch" when the king is yelling at Anne. There were rumors of witchcraft going around at that time too against Anne to discredit her further once she lost the king's favor!

Kalyn Hanixman

So, to shed some light - Anne is portrayed as the most “childlike” of ex wives. She didn’t bothered with politics, and after a king would throw advances her way she refused to sleep with him aparently until he marries her - that’s why the push for annulment and marriage. And the part when she “flirted”, from what I gathered all this years ago - aparently it was more of Henry’s paranoia not really her actually cheating. I don’t know how accurate to the English history it is, that’s what I gathered from a few stories I read after listening to this musical at its peak :) but taking into account when historically it was happening u can actually safely assume that Henry was a d*ck and could do whatever cos he was a man and a king, and neither of those wives had much say in what was happening - all of them tried to game the system to secure their or their children future. I personally can’t wait when u reach KH song - i have a feeling it will be glorious. Tho I would advice major trigger warning on this one 😅

NeNo

Fun (maybe not so fun) facts about anne: before she went with the king she was one of Catherine of aragons hand maidens, she was 29-35 when she was beheaded and there's a theory that she actually wasn't too flirtatious- Henry just made it up so he could marry another woman bc she didn't give him a son and had 17 miscarriages (she only had 1 daughter)😞, it's also hard to know what she actually looked like bc most of her portraits were destroyed by henry

AceOfTheDeck

I had every lyric of this song memorized back in my freshman year of highschool, amazing song but the time I spent listening to get to that point is absurd

Dylan Murphy

Waiting for you to get to All You Wanna Do is going to be torture if this is your reaction just to Don't Lose Your Head lmao

Ara the Scribe

The line is “you damned witch” but because they’re British and to make it fit the rhyme scheme it’s pronounced with two syllables damn-ed

Anthony

The line is you damned witch

DenVH
