TWISTED - Act 1, Parts 4&5 | Unedited Reaction

The greatest love story ever written- Aaaand it's gone!

Comments

I can say this now that I know he’s finished the show, but I can’t wait to see the part where he figures out that this show isn’t about how Jafar becomes evil, but instead it surmises that the movie Aladdin as we know it is unreliable because it assumes it’s being told BY Aladdin. I think most people knew that the concept going in was that it’s parodying Wicked but with Jafar. I hope he goes back and watches the beginning again now that he’s finished knowing that Jafar doesn’t turn into the bad guy. Aladdin is the bad guy in this version.

I KNEW that "science says you're dead and gone forever" part was going to get him!

Author Reinvented

About the "goofiness in the beginning and emotional later" thing I think it's important to remember that 1. This was written as 1 full play you'd watch all at once it was only in parts because of YouTube limitations at the time and 2. This was starkids 8th youtube uploaded musical so they had an established audience

DotDotDot

On the topic of the show becoming really deep and emotional after the silly beginning... It was absolutely on purpose in my opinion. The 'catch' of the show is that you are expecting the same silliness that the characters are all introduced with, but it turns you on a 180 when the real plot starts to come through. The whole beginning section is more character work and such because they have to try and shift the audience's perception of the characters they know so well. Once Jafar sees that scarab, the show really starts to shine and show you the depth behind the characters they introduced.

I got to see Holy Musical B@man! Live since they were based in Chicago when they did that one.

Hugabug008

same! so happy i got to see dylan and the others live in the starkid jangle ball in 2022, though im still incredibly jealous that my older brother got to see the original run of twisted when i was too young/not interested in starkid yet

teatalker25

Dylan Saunders and Joe Walker have always been my favorite Starkid performers from the very beginning. Dylan coming back after 6 years to be in Black Friday and VHS Christmas Carol made me so happy!

Hugabug008

I love This series. I played Jafar in one of the first regional productions of Twisted and it’s a very important show to me. Seeing you experience it for the first time is just so great.

Dylan Saunders is an absolute powerhouse performer. Whenever you finish Twisted, if you’re interested in another Starkid show, he is one of the leads in Black Friday and KILLS his musical numbers. Be warned, it’s a horror comedy show, but the songs are just… so amazing. And Dylan really gets to shine in his numbers.

Anarissa

Oh my gosh I never realized that. But you're right. Oh my gosh you're RIGHT

Sterling Klein

Oh that vocal analysis about them separating but landing in the same place while becoming more vulnerable is... yeah. Exactly

D. Sparrow

Oh my gosh I can't wait for you to actually get to the song Twisted if this is how you react to this one

Sterling Klein

They have such good chemistry! Also fun fact, Meredith is proposed to in every single show she is in

Masochismet

Starship is slept on by the fandom I swear

Masochismet

Oh my gosh I just realized "you don't know you" is even sung by the same actors who play Scheherazade and Ja'far (Meredith Stephen and Dylan Saunders). They have such great duets

Sterling Klein

"the soul of a lecherous thief" is what she said. You must've forgotten that they have accurate closed captions in all of the parts!

Sterling Klein

"you don't know you" from Starship (another Starkid musical) is one of those songs that feel like that to me. Like, how the heck is it that sweet? The mother's song (I think it's called "When The World's At Stake") is def another great example. Oh, Beauty from Starship is another. I love that song so much. And also Kick It Up A Notch. I think I'm just establishing I really like Starship. Huh.

Sterling Klein

I love getting the full video uncut. That's why I joined! Saw the first section of you reacting to this musical on YouTube (it's one of my absolute favorites!) and knew I needed to see your full reaction. I live for getting to see people react to my favorite things. Usually it's loved ones and friends but now I've gotten to find your channel and am enjoying seeing your reactions too!

Sterling Klein

Ah, I see you found the diamond in the rough of this show. My favourite thing is how often you predict something or ask if it's going to get better and I found myself saying out loud, "give it a minute!" xD Great reaction! 👍

Tia Neilla

"How is the one of the greatest love songs coming from team starkid?" that's exactly how I feel about the mothers song from Trail to Oregon by starkid, that song is far far to good for the show it's in. This show though is a masterpiece in every way

Masochismet

Joined just for this episode. Also glad that there are more episodes out because I am waiting for you to connect the dots.

Scheherazade(?) was the authoress of the 1,001 Nights, which includes the tales of Aladdin. So, that was the major reference behind her name.

Justanerd 97

starkid has a lot of funny haha and is iconic for their humor but they also have some of the most emotionally hard hitting moments as well as some of the coolest and most incredibly written lines that i've ever seen, i genuinely adore their writing so much it inspires me a lot!!

ariona leilani

I can’t wait for him to listen to the song in the credits

Trickstress

'If I Believed' is genuinely my favourite Starkid song

Addy0302

Also, fun fact. The original story that Disney's Aladdin is based on is from 1001 Nights/Arabian Nights, which (in case you weren't aware) is a compilation of Middle Eastern and Indian short stories that we have early references to first popping up all the way back to the 9th century. Or, well, while the short story/fable is likely even older, being told and retold again and again and slowly morphing into the version of the story that would eventually be written down and allowed to persist more or less unchanged for over a millenia (until a transformative work such as Disney's Aladdin and Starkids Twisted comes along with their own spin on it), the oldest surviving written version we have of Aladdins story is from 1001 Nights... and all versions of 1001 nights have Scheherazade's story (young girl forced to wed a cruel sultan who through creativity and wit manages to postpone her execution by 1001 nights, simply by beginning a new tale every night and leaving it on a cliffhanger right before dawn comes), as their narrative framing device. So Starkid deciding to take the silent narrator/framing device of the original version story that Disney were inspired by (but had left out of their retelling), and tie her back into the narrative in their own "twisted" rendition of the Disney's version of the story as Ja'fars lost love and motivation behind him attempting to "reunite the two lovers"/halves of the scarab shaped key and chase after a legend of a wish granting oil lamp, despite up until now presenting his character as the ultimate straight-man stuck in a corrupt fairy-tale believing world, is SUCH a genius writing decision on their end. And with the addition of Scheherazade's character, the show simultaneously starts to introduce this ongoing theme of story telling as a transformative act that is only going to grow more complex as the show progresses. You know, in-between all the dick jokes and casual swearing. The Lang brothers (and Eric Gale) absolutely put their all into writing this show that fully could have just been the dumb parody it first presents itself as, and then released this masterpiece in full for free on their youtube channel like they do with all of their shows - and the world is all the richer for it. God I love this show, dick jokes and all.

I so wish there was a version of A Very Potter Musical with better audio. At the time I was just happy to have a recording Ican watch at all, but the audio quality makes it hard to get new people into it or have it on in the background...

Philine Trnka

I've been OBSESSED with Thousand and One Nights ("the love ballad") since I first watched this show, and seeing you go through all the same emotions I did fully made me feel like I was experiencing it all for the first time again, right along with you!! There's just something so magic about the way the song sells you on the idea that knowing and wanting to know someone's story, with all it's twists and turns, until you "know every bit by heart" is so such a big part of what loving and falling in love with someone is. I've never really been big on the idea of love at first sight... but this isn't even that, not really. More like intrigue and the need to know more about a person who's left a strong first impression, with the love growing stronger the more they learn about each other, all leading into the wish that theirs should be "the story with no end". Just.... gorgeous. And heartbreaking. Because yes, this is all going down in the middle of a flashback sequence, and we know Scheherazade is no longer with Ja'far in the current timeline. But for a moment there you forget, you get dragged into the fantasy of their love story right along with them, before reality inevitably starts to set in. In just two-three short scenes and ONE song, this rude and goofy Aladdin parody from 2013 pulls a full on Hadestown on you and makes you forget, just for a moment, that what you're watching is a Disney villains retroactively extrapolated tragic backstory. Because you know this can't possibly end on a happy note, but for a moment there they "let you see the world for what it could be, in spite of the way that it is," and you just can't help but hope that "maybe it might turn out this time". Insane. What the actual fuck. And Dylan Saunders absolutely SELLS it, giving the performance of a lifetime and belting through ACTUAL TEARS.... IN AN ALADDIN PARODY MUSICAL. WHAT????? HUH???? Thank you so so much for allowing me to fall in love all over again with one of my all time favorite shows, and reminding me just why that is.

Cinnamoone

I'm having fun. HA! That's how they do it; you think it's just silly and crass and dumb, and then WHAM! they sucker punch you in the gut with feels, and now you're attached. The carpet is possessed by the soul of a lecherous thief. If you're not familiar with the story, Scheherazade is a mythological figure in One Thousand and One Nights. She was the daughter of a vizier, and the ruler of her kingdom got cheated on by his wife, who was prompty executed for the transgression. The king decided to marry a new woman every night, spend the night with her, and then put execute her the next morning before she could be unfaithful. Eventually, they ran out of noble-blooded women, so the vizier was forced let Scheherazade marry the ruler. Her little sister came during that evening and asked for a bedtime story. Scheherazade began an exciting tale, but stopped in the middle of it when morning came. The ruler was so invested in the tale she told, he spared her an extra day to finish the story. She finished the first one and started a second, but stopped in the middle again when morning came. This continued for 1000 nights, and on the 1001st, she told the ruler she had no more stories to tell, but by that point they had fallen in love and had 3 sons together, and he spared her permanently.

Dylan Saunders is so good!!! I adore him as Scrooge in their VHS Christmas Carol (they released a new one with someone else as Scrooge and he’s great but Dylan is my fav). ADORED that one I think it’d be right up ur ally and it’s shorter so it’s a good one sit down kinda show.

So, Starkid is known for it's humor and most of the viewers in the audience at this point would have been Starkid fans. This is probably objectively their best musical (at least before the Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals although I'll always have a soft spot for starship) because it has a lot of the heart that their other stories lack. A Very Potter Musical and Trail to Oregon are great and have some emotional moments, but none of their characters reach the height of Jafar. They put the funny stuff first because that's what the audience came for and bury the deep emotional hook because they weren't known for that at the time Also, originally this musical was posted as one video, so unlikely that you would stop after starting. It wasn't released in such a format that you'd have to wait for the next part. I'd be like stopping Legally Blonde before Chip on My Shoulder because you don't like that she's chasing a boy. Once you've sat down for a 2hr musical you're likely not to turn it off unless you get bored

Allison Watts

Mortius has officially been bit by the starkid bug!

Blakely W

I thini You forgot they have subtitles

José Antonio Gómez Rodríguez

I'll also say, this is one of my favorite musicals ^^ Not THE number one, but very much up there. Mostly because this section you just finished, as well as a few other instances you haven't gotten to yet. So excited for you to see it to the end ^^

Daisy whatzittoyou

It's always so jarring when they treat the sultan more like a god. Considering hes-- him. Mr. (redacted)-inverter.

Daisy whatzittoyou

I'm loving the Twisted journey. If you're interested in more Starkid, I recommend "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals"

StoneWall

The heartstring-pulling is real with this one!

Kory Misun

Rewatching this with someone deeply feeling the story is making me feel like the first time I saw this. Mortius, stop making me cry at work; my coworkers are getting concerned.

Natalie

I don't think I've ever seen Dylan Saunders give any less than 120 percent to any performance. And there have been some truly silly parts of his that I've seen.

Eliška Svobodová

He might like Nerdy Prudes too since that seems to parody Teen Musicals. ...basically ...he needs to see the Hatchet Town series lol

Shay-Thelogicaldreamer

I haven’t rewatched this show in such a long while, I forgot a lot of the twists. Forgot how amazing it is. He’s in for a ride

Olessia Tchijova

Fully agree, I think he’d like The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals as well, as it mildly parodies musicals themselves as a whole. I think he’d have a fun time with that

Mafidon

Starkid musicals can really take you through a roller coaster of emotions! If I Believed is honestly one of their greatest musical moments, as well as the act 1 closing song!

Sophie Cropper

One of us! One of us! Honestly, i feel like you would really like Black Friday. Its one of their more serious shows and touches on the elements you seem to really like about this. Its part of the Hatchet Town series so if you decide to check it out, highly recommend it. Also, something tells me you might like their Christmas Carol.

Shay-Thelogicaldreamer

The emotional whiplash in this show is so real 🤣

Ashley Evers

“ it’s a testament to the audio quality…” Yeah… can’t exactly say the same for the first few musicals in StarKid’s catalog (as well written and memorable as they are)

Daniel Wilson

If I Believed is a top 10 musical theater song for me

MrDad

Wow, watching Mortuis fall in love and get his heartbroken in one video...

Mediocre_ Me

The thing about star kid is that they start with humor and crassness with depth hidden and then all of the sudden they get serious and you realize that you are attached to
