I think it's interesting that, out of all the things Damon has done in his years as a vampire, the event in his life the Phoenix Stone chose to torment him with was something that happened before he became a vampire. Also? 16 year old Stefan was a whiny, self-involved little shit, wasn't he? Damon's off fighting a war, risking his life and watching people he cares about get killed on a daily basis, and Stefan wrote him a letter basically saying "the girl I liked dumped me, nobody has a worse life than I do!"
