The Stargate audiobooks starring Daniel and Vala are great to show their relationship.

I have not caught up on your reactions for this show yet. I actually haven’t caught up with any of your shows right now. I’m very side-tracked, sorry about that. I do want to give you my thoughts on the show so far from what I have seen. I think the show was really good for the most part. The beginning had some weaker episodes, but it progressively got better minus an episode here and there. I really liked season 9 and the new story they started with it. I love the characters, and they had some very fun and creative storylines throughout. Originally, I started watching this show because I saw every week that you were reacting to it for months, and it never interested me. I thought it was some old Star Trek type show and wrote it off. Well, I was kinda right but mostly wrong. It was older but not as old as I thought, and it was similar to Star Trek, but I personally think it’s much better. But when I kept seeing you react to it every week for months, I looked up the show and read a bit about it and decided to start from the beginning with the movie. The movie was fine but a little slow, IMO. The show was better in every way though. When we got to the show, I started to see why people loved it. I even enjoyed that one early episode most people seem to think is bad. I think you were on season 5 or 6 or somewhere around there when I started, and I binged all the way until I caught up. But yeah, I’m not good at writing, so this is already a bunch of pointless commentary that nobody cares about lol. So the point is that I really enjoyed the show, and it took a LONG time to get here. You're almost done with this franchise now. How does that feel?

And now Creedence Clearwater is stuck in my head... 🤦‍♂️ 17 years now, I can't hear that song without thinking about this episode...

The writers wanted Jack, but by this point in the season, they didn't have the budget to bring RDA on; and SyFy wasn't inclined to pony up extra money for it. It's unfortunate, as I think this would have elevated the episode if it was Jack instead of Landry on the ship, getting to say goodbye to the Asgard, having Sam at his death bed (like, I'm not a Jack and Sam shipper, but even I'll admit, the thought of 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 version of the scene would have definitely hit hard). I get where Daniel was coming from when Vala starts trying to take off his pants. For literally the last three years she has taken perverse joy needling Daniel; making inappropriate jokes, specifically about him; always trying to get a rise out of him. Case in point, this episode kicks off with her having convinced the crew it was Daniel's birthday in order to throw a surprise party. On a good day, he's unphased by it. He rolls with it, politely shuts down the party; and we have seen that he's come to respect Vala and is genuinely proud of the strides she's made - but she can still be a pain in the ass. So, cue them getting stuck on the ship for three month, no end in sight. Vala's already shown up to his room once before with her coy, flirty routine and he calmly closed the door. But cabin fever's setting in, they're all on edge and Vala makes her move and Daniel's resolve to be more tactful has runout. He thinks she's messing with him again and he can't take it anymore - quite possibly because he's open to the possibility if he thought she was serious, but he doesn't want to open himself up to her, only for her to turn it around and make it a joke or exploit the fact she got him to finally sleep with her, like she's always talking about. Especially if a week later Carter finally figures out how to get them out of that situation and they're back at the regular grind at the SGC. He'd never hear the end of it. In short, he's got all these walls up with Vala, and not without reason. Then he sees that Vala's not engaging him the way she normally would, with bored indifference; like this is all a game and she's waiting for him to take the bait. He sees she's really upset; and his first thought was probably that she's faking that too. And then it sinks in that it's real and she's being vulnerable with him, which allows him to be vulnerable with her. I seem to recall hearing an account that Michael and Claudia insisted on refilming the fight scene, as it was originally blocked and filmed much more intense, especially on Daniel's part; and they weren't happy with it and reworked it to what the final version was.

Regarding Ba'al releasing a toxin - it's long been established that this is a natural defense mechanism of a goa'uld. Mainly when it's dying, which is why the Tokra symbiote poison always meant the host would die (and I think that's when they first introduced the concept; when Daniel went undercover as Yu's servant; and he didn't want to kill his ex when she showed up...) Presumably the symbiotes can release this toxin at will too, if it feels their life (or access to its host) is being threatened; and in this case, Ba'al ostensibly fought sedation just enough do exactly that.

A random side thought about the Ori. I thought the Ori as a general story was a good change of pace; especially where they pivoted from one overarching group of antagonists who only pretend to be gods, to some bigs bads who more or less were kind of gods posing as gods. There's qualifications to their omnipotents, but it's hard saying they're not gods given their powers. That said, the major point that I've never cared for is taking on an extra backstory to the Ancients' history. Part of the problem was the misstep when Janet commented about them being around for millions years when they first realized that Ancients looked like humans. Either the writers hadn't really considered what they were going to do with the Ancients or didn't think about just how long ago "millions of years" actually is. Then they tack on more history on top of that and it really becomes kind of convoluted. In my opinion they had the perfect blank canvas character/species, that would have allowed them to keep the same general premise - the Furlings. They came into their technological prime around the same time as the Ancients; we could have found out they tried to ascend, like the ancients, but they couldn't achieve that state of being, until they discovered that using the new evolution of humans to worship them gave them some kind of boost or something. The Ancients and Furlings went to war, ending the Alliance of the Four Races - the Asgard moved away from the Milky Way in favor of Ida, the Knox retreated to their homeworld to explore inner peace of whatever. And the Ancients and the Furlings, now called the Ori, beat each other senseless; the Ori infect the Ancients with the plague that would eventually kill them, and the Ancients come up with a way of expelling the Ori from the Milky Way, to the far reaches of the universe, where they're never expected to find their way back. That is, until Daniel and Vala make contact.

A fun tidbit, although at this point I can't recall definitively where I saw this to confirm its authenticity, but I've heard that Amanda Tapping has said that when they were making this episode, she and Chris Judge decided that, as a counterpoint to the more overt Daniel/Vala storyline playing out in the episode, that she and Chris would subtly play Sam and Teal'c as also quietly having their own relationship going on after they get stuck aboard the ship. I don't know why, but I kind of dig that idea; and accept the headcanon, regardless of how true it is. Maybe it's because I've never gotten on board with Sam and Jack (I will stan Sam and Janet until final days - Sam bonds with Cassie, but Janet's the one to adopt her? Come on.) But it also kind of makes sense, with them being stuck on the ship for decades; there are only two women onboard, Daniel ends up with Vala - Sam has a much longer history with Teal'c, she's invariably closer to him than Cam (or Laundry, if you want to be specific). It probably wouldn't take much, especially in close confinement, for the platonic bond they have to turn to something else.

You asked me if I was always a Daniel and Vala shipper or if I only became a shipper through your rewatches. I was always a Daniel and Vala shipper. In fact, when I first started watching your reactions (early seasons), I would count down the days until you got to the episode where Vala was first introduced lol. I would look at the date and try to estimate how many more years/months it would take to get to season 8 lmao.

Daniel

It would have been nice to see a shot of Daniel and Vala getting married or, at the very least, show wedding rings on their fingers. A beautiful contrast from the start of the series: Daniel losing his wife in the very first episode of the show but gaining a wife in the final episode of the show. One thing I do appreciate about this episode is that they did not completely undo it all. The version of Teal'c at the end of this episode is the same version that lived on that ship for 50 years. I like that the memories and stories live on in Teal'c. Had they got a season 11, I would have loved them to explore all the things that happened on the ship through Teal'c's recollection. There's so much that we did not see. I would have also loved them to explore Teal'c's emotional and mental state given that those people that he lived with for so long did, in a sense, die. While everyone is still technically alive, all the memories and experiences they created and shared together for 50 fucking years are gone. All 10 seasons of this show don't even come close to that. 50 seasons of SG-1 memories on that ship. All gone. That is a death in my eyes. I can definitely see Teal'c having a sense of loneliness given that he's the only one that remembers. But I will say one thing that puts on a smile on my face, after having spent 50 years seeing Daniel and Vala growing old together as a couple, I'm convinced Teal'c is now the biggest Daniel and Vala shipper lmao.

Daniel

This finale is a paradox to me. I think it's both a good & bad finale at the same time. It starts of with a big huge thing of getting the entire Asgard legacy but switches to a contained personal story with the main cast, but it just feels like an episode that could've fit any place in a season. The scene with Daniel holding a crying Vala was supposed to be that she got pregnant & had a miscarriage, but that had to be cut for time. Also Sam & Teal'c were to have started up a relationship which also got cut. One thing Brad Wright was adamant about was he never wanted to show have any kind of definitive ending. He wanted it to be that even though the show ended, the team still goes on missions & the adventure stillcontinues, we just sadly don't get to see them

Retro Tom

It's like the writers went out of their way to tease Daniel and Vala shippers this episode. But I do want to dissect that scene between Daniel and Vala where they finally hook up as a lot of people did not like the way Daniel spoke to Vala, due to how cruel he was: Let me start by saying that Daniel would ABSOLUTELY not have said any of that had he known it would hurt Vala's feelings. It would be TOTALLY out of character for him to say those things on purpose knowing it would upset her, hence his "don't act like your hurt" comment and his look of surprise when he realised she was actually hurt. That's good enough for me to let him off the hook. But the more interesting question is why was he SO cruel in that scene? Even if she was just trolling/playing games, why is he so triggered? To answer that question we first need to go back to season 9 as the scene we just watched mirrors a similar scene we saw back in 9x4. If you can recall from that scene in 9x4, Vala also makes a move on a then bearded Daniel. Of course, at that time, Vala was just trolling/having fun which Daniel obviously knew. When Daniel proceeds to reject her, Vala pretends to be hurt and gives some sob story about how she use to be engaged before she was taken as a host (which Daniel for a second actually believed). But it was just more trolling by Vala. All this to say that Vala usually does this sort of stuff when she's bored. This is what Daniel was thinking when she was making her move yet again. But why was Daniel so upset this time? Sure, it can be annoying when Vala does this, but why is he overreacting this time compared to before? I believe the answer is because this time he genuinely has feelings for her and he doesn't appreciate when she trolls him because she's playing with his emotions. Imagine someone you liked kept playing these games with you? You'd constantly be thinking to yourself "Do they actually like me or are they just trolling me yet again". I could definitely see that being upsetting, especially when I think about if my past crushes in life did that to me. So Daniel's overreaction this time round was him unknowingly telling on himself.

Daniel

I agree with your overall assessment of the episode. It is a decent episode if you take it out of the context of it being the series final. However, given it is the series final, it doesn't meet the requirements that you would expect for a series final. Only the final scene in the gateroom was giving series final vibes, everything else not so much. Although, we did inherit all the knowledge and technology of the Asgard this episode. This might make us too OP now. And you might be thinking that's fine since the show is ending anyway, but we still have Atlantis and Universe to get through which means the writers need to constantly keep it in mind when writing more stories. For example, we saw the Odyssey use the new Asgard plasma beam weapon this episode due to all the Asgard technology we just received. It was able to destroy Ori ships which are probably the strongest ships we have encountered in the series (including Atlantis). Therefore, anything weaker than an Ori ship should be easily defeated when fighting an Earth ship (assuming we port all the same technology to other Earth ships as well)

Daniel

What about the ███ where they ████ and we find out ███████ was ███████ all along?

Sir Jimmothy

She did mention the movies would be coming, next week we'll have Stargate: The Ark Of Truth followed by a week break before getting into Atlantis Season 4. Continuum will follow later when it fits continuity wise. If you'd like to view the Watch Order I prepared for her, you can find it on the Discord channel as a pinned post in the spoilers-stargate channel. You can also get a sense of what's coming next by checking out the schedule on our site: https://www.aftershowreactions.com/schedule As for what tier they will be on, I'd say most likely the movie tier but that's up to her to decide. (also, please don't mention any details about the contents of the movies)

Tony

You didn't mention the follow up SG-1 movies, first of which is a direct sequel to the series (Ark of Truth, Continuum) - will you react to them on this tier as well?

PT Gunn

About to watch, but I remember that song hits so hard once you've got that far through the episode.
