DESIGN TUESDAY: Character designs for EMPOWERED vol.9, pt.1

For most of my time on Empowered, I would produce, at best, a quick sketch of a new character before drawing a comic page; often, in fact, I would just design new capes on the actual page. ("Just in time" character design, I suppose.)

However, Empowered vol.9 featured so many new characters during Emp's book-long run through a gauntlet of supervillains that I sat down and cranked out twenty-odd pages worth of chara designs before work on the main plotline got underway.

Wellp, here's the first set of said design sketches, folks!

A few words:

Note that Country Strong's original design wasn't all that muscular; the final version in the published comic, though, gradually became more akin to Don Simpson's Megaton Man during his later appearances, as seen below:

"Stumpgrindr" above was never actually named in the book, as I recall.

I appear to have never used the "Generic Minion Outfit" design above.

Black Mechamamba was, I think, an homage of sorts to Shirow's mecha designs from one of the later Intron Depot books.

Next week, more Empowered vol. 9 chara designs. Yay!
