Agree with above comment about enjoying your videos. Also appreciate the extra info about this coming up at a recording session. Already knew there another music biz friend who also works in film that after the first devastating heartbreak Jake G pulled her back in at least twice. It never lasted long and there was a lot of gaslighting about her not be intellectual or cool enough for Mr. Hip New Yorker. So got smart fast and decided she wouldn’t play his game & did not respond so he used common industry friends to try and get her to contact him (your friends talk & my friends talk). She was done and I know a decision was made to make it about that turning point when you’re done and can be upbeat & be happy again. Glad to hear the story of when it was written & h

The musicians in costume are her band and have been with her since the beginning; they're there as entertainment while Taylor does a quick change (there are a lot of them) and moves to the next set. There are a lot of references from this song in her more recent song, 'I Bet You Think About Me' that will make more sense; they're about the same ex. The story behind this one is that she was in the studio will Max Martin and Shellback working on a different song when someone who knew her ex (cough{{Jake}}cough) came in and said he heard she and the ex were getting back together. When he left, she told the producers basically what she says in the phone call part of the song, and they wrote this instead, determined to make it super catchy and pop because he hates pop music.
