Kick Me, Kate: Let's Get Started

In which we lay the groundwork for everything that's coming up over the next couple of months. Also, some footage of me learning the Arming Sword, because FUN!

Of course, you'd have to grow a good 8 to 10 inches, but good makeup can do wonders.

:D

A little disappointed you're not doing the final scene of Highlander. It would have been interesting to see you cosplay as Clancy Brown.

Anders

He's a method actor. You need to read the play to him and then he will be in the moment.

Anders

Nice. My nearest one is several hours away, which is a shame, but apparently there's one quite near my Mum, so I may have something to do next time I go visit... :D

He will not take direction. It is a constant struggle :D

The SCA is sort of half way between a real historical reenactment group and a LARP group without any fantasy elements (that is to say there are no elves, wizards etc in the SCA). It is definitely much bigger in the USA than it is in Europe (I think mostly because there is a lot more competition from other medieval reenactment groups in Europe). That being said, if you are interested in finding a group near you, here is a good place to start: https://insulaedraconis.org/Library/UsefulResources/findingalocalgroup.html

And who will coreograph the cat? Does he take direction well or is he more of a "spur-of-the-moment" actor?

Anders

I know nothing about SCA except that they’re mentioned in Honor Harrington, but honestly that’s enough to endear it to me without further information, it sounds amazing 😁 Did you fight with all sorts of stuff or did you specialise with particular weapons or time period? I have a friend who does reenactment but it’s (obviously) limited to the medieval period. The footage is our first full run of all the exam choreography. Because it’s a course for actors, the choreography is done by the teacher, (in the same way that a fight director would do it in a show). So we learned it, filmed it, watched it all once through and then went, respectively, “Vicki where is your shield????” And “Jill where are your targets????” We did subsequently improve at least a bit, I promise 😁 Is it easy to find SCA groups, or are they very region or country specific?

Jill Bearup

I realize it was your opponent who had the shield, nevertheless, I assumed you choreographed it together. It's just that I cringe when I see someone swing their shield uselessly behind them when trying to dramatically throw a blow (It's not doing you any good back there). In answer to your question, I did SCA armored fighting for 13 years (it's not necessarily historically accurate, but it definitely gives you a sense of what it is like when someone is really trying to hit you.)

PS Is it HEMA you do or something else? I’ve only briefly had a go at HEMA but it was a lot of fun and also massively painful in spite of all the padding.

Jill Bearup

I mean, that is very good advice generally...but I’m slightly confused because I didn’t...have a shield. That was Vicki. Luckily, since swords are not my forte (ha, I made a sword pun) we aren’t going to be using them for this project.

Jill Bearup

I love your videos and I am sure you spent a lot of time choreographing your fights. However watching the fights with a sword and shield are painful. As someone who has had some experience actually fighting with a sword and shield (as in the not-choreographed-actually-trying-to-hit-each-other variety). I need to recommend that you at least try to keep your shield between you and your opponent while striking. When a person completely opens their defense while striking (that is to say you throw your shield arm back), they are most likely to get chopped in half by an experienced sword fighter, no matter how dramatic it looks.
