I wonder if this is how Robert Jordan felt when writing the Wheel of Time characters, as if the more he wrote them the more he realized that they were stubborn as mules and didn't want to go where he wanted. Being stubborn is explicitly a part of the story and characters mention it, but writing that probably put him in a bind. And now you're writing a story about a writer who's story is getting away from her, and you periodically comment on it. I'm not sure how many levels of inception this is, but I can say that this sounds like trying to write an immaculately planned out story with D&D players who love improve theater who are calling the shots. Chaos and fun (for the audience)!
