Poet-Seer
Words woven from moonlight. Verses that stir the soul. Prophecies whispered from the hidden cadences of slumber.
Origin: Earthborn or Dreamborn
Requirements: Minimum WIS 9
Prime Requisite: CHA
Hit Dice: 1d6
Maximum Level: 14
Armor: None
Weapons: Dagger, staff, sling
Languages: Alignment, Common, Dreamspeech
The Poet-Seer wanders the Dreamlands armed with poetry and vision. His words can soothe or inspire, hide or reveal, and sometimes open a path to what lies beyond the veil. He recalls forgotten lays, recites ominous riddles, and utters verses that bend the very fabric of dream.
Captive Rhyme
Beginning at 2nd level, the Poet-Seer may recite verse that captivates dream-creatures and Earthborn alike. Choose one creature within 30’ who can hear and understand the Poet-Seer. The target must save vs. spells or be enthralled for 2d6 rounds.
Effects of enthrallment: The affected creature will listen raptly, unable to take hostile action against the Poet-Seer or his allies unless attacked or directly harmed. It will follow simple requests that do not obviously endanger its life.
Restrictions: If the Poet-Seer or his allies attack the creature, the effect immediately ends.
Uses per day: The Poet-Seer may use this ability once per day at 2nd level, plus one additional use per day for every three levels gained thereafter (2/day at 5th, 3/day at 8th, etc.).
Combat
A Poet-Seer cannot wear any kind of armor. However, he can use daggers, staves, and slings.
Divine Magic
See Magic in Old-School Essentials Classic Fantasy for details on divine magic.
Spell casting: Starting at 2nd level, a Poet-Seer may pray to the Great Ones to receive spells. The power and number of spells available to a Poet-Seer are determined by experience level. A Poet-Seer's spells may be selected from the list found in the next two Patreon posts (September 23 and September 25, 2025).
Using magic items: As a spell-caster, a Poet-Seer can use magic scrolls of spells on the class's list. They may also use any item that an Oracle can use.
Dream Verse
By reciting poetry aloud, the Poet-Seer can inspire allies, calm spirits, or rouse courage. Once per day per level, allies within earshot gain +1 to attack rolls and saving throws for 1 turn.
Lore of Dreams
A Poet-Seer has a 2-in-6 chance of knowing prophecies, riddles, and secret knowledge about the Dreamlands. This ability can also be used to identify magic items and artifacts.
After Reaching 9th Level
At 9th level, the Poet-Seer becomes a renowned oracle of the Dreamlands and may establish a Sanctuary of Verses, such as an amphitheater, temple, or other place where dreamers and denizens gather to hear his prophecies. He attracts apprentices and followers — not warriors but seekers and scribes — and his presence subtly reshapes the surrounding dreamscape with heightened omens and visions. From this level onward, his prophecies may touch on great destinies and cosmic matters and, at the referee’s discretion, the most powerful Poet-Seers may even send their verses across the veil into the Waking World as riddling visions.
