11 - Agares - aka Agaros

Agares. The first duke under the power of the east, <is named Agares,> he commeth up mildile [i.e. he appears willingly] in the likenes of a faire old man, riding upon a crocodile, and carrieng a hawke on his fist; hee teacheth presentlie all maner of toongs, he fetcheth backe all such as runne awaie, and maketh them runne that stand still; he overthroweth all dignities <supernaturall and temporall,> hee maketh earthquakes, [lit. "and makes spirits of the earth dance"] and is of the order of vertues, having under his regiment thirtie one legions.

The second spirit is a Duke called Agares, he is under ye power of ye East and cometh up in the form of a fair Old man riding upon a Crocodill, very mildly, carrying a goshawke on his fist. he maketh them runne that stand still, and fetcheth back ye runnawayes. he can teach all Languages or Tongues presently, he hath the power also to destroy dignities, both supernaturall & Temporall; & cause Earthquakes. he was of the order of Vertues; he hath under his government 31 Legions &c: & this is [his] seale or Character wch is to be worne as [a] Lamen.

The 2 is called Agaros, he can teach all manner of languages, & tonges, he cane bringe, againe a fugitive or one rune awaye, & can promote to dignitye & worshipe, & appeareth in lykenes of an old man ridinge upon a cockeadrill.

Notes: The earliest mention of Agares depicts him as riding a cockatrice, despite later entries referring to him as riding a crocodile. This is likely because people eventually learned what a crocodile was and thought it was cooler than a cockatrice. First duke of the east, and therefore serves under Beezlebub. The goshawk is traditionally a symbol of ferocity and strength, which is why atilla the hun chose the goshawk for his personal banner. That said, Agares’s abilities seem to be tied to language in some way, and any description of him seems to deal with his ability for translation. Agares is likely responsible for the administration of the infernal tongue, possibly tied to the giants holding up the pit.

Brand of tongues - The speed at which the marked learns new languages is greatly accelerated. Speaking, reading, and writing comes naturally. Use of the brand will allow one to read speak and understand new languages with no difficulty, however the marked pays twofold for this, as after use all speech and text is perceived as garbled, maddening, infernal script for twice the time they spent with the brand active.
