Typo “’Adventurers’ intuition’ is but the fool’s version of what we will learn here. --> “‘Adventurers’ intuition’ (it's the darn opening single quotation mark again)

Framing Device

I came to comments thinking the same thing, she is so great.

John Brady Anderson

Fixed, thanks!

Veritas Dolor

Is there a discord?

Martin Brandel

well they cut off all senses, but if you use it with detection my guess is that you can. but I don't think it is necessary

Ole Halvorsen

Can Rain use Aura Focus's sensory deprivation to aid in learning Reading (or rather feeling)?

Random Information

Except there's plenty of assholes among the watch keepers. Another thing to consider, besides her mastery over her domain, is that she only had a single spell and one or two metamagics for years. When you spend all your time practicing a single thing, you become really good at it. Similar to Staavo, who had only Ice Bolt and Ice Affinity and had far more mastery over the spell than Mahria, who probably spent more time leveling various cold aspect skills rather than Ice Bolt.

Cirvante

That was a really funny chapter :) thanks!

Sana being a magic prodigy kinda got me thinking about the 'do you think the system is doing a good job distributing power?' conversation Rain and Vatreece had. My guess is that the warden was teaching good/kind people to brain good long before she met Rain.

Starless

I don't think the watch would hand out rare Arcane Mage builds to officers. Vatreece mentioned that it's only done in extremely rare cases, likely healers and supports. They don't want their members to become too powerful. There's still a chance that Ascension could stumble across the unlock requirements for Arcane Mage before Sana increases her cap, but I doubt it. And Ascension already has multiples of certain classes like Swordplay Warrior, Fire Evocation Mage, Restoration Mage and Shield-wielding Defender. I see no problem with Sana having the same class as Jamus. As someone who knows the watch keeper builds, she might end up with a more interesting build than him and her mastery over her Domain already allows her to control her magic to a degree that Jamus can only dream off. What I want to see is an Arcane Mage who specs into barrier metamagic like Barrier Shaping and Affix Conjuration. The stuff that Brovose was doing. And the Adamants like hiding their ranged units behind barriers, so there has to be a hidden control metamagic that makes Arcane Bulwark semi-permeable, likely unlocked by leveling Mana Manipulation to Rank 10. I just like the DA:I mechanic of dropping barriers on teammates rather than healing wounds. It would allow mages to delve Rank 25+ depths without worrying about getting insta-killed by a ranged monster or stealth striker.

Cirvante

God I love Sana. She’s easily my favorite character in this entire story. I really, genuinely, absolutely, hope she becomes a main character on the level of Ameliah and Tallheart. Turn the trio into a quartet please!

NethanielShade

I wonder what caused the Majistraal civil war? My initial guess was that it was a fight over being the main administrator for the system and that might have been a contributing factor. But perhaps it was a split between those who wanted to keep the current system that is quicker and more user friendly even though the damage limit provisions are weaker and thus prone to abuse that results in cracks in reality. The others might have wanted to think longer term, that the cracks in reality were too big a threat to ignore and so they should make a massive system overhaul that would require a higher focus on the basics of the soul from scratch (closer to Karum’s initial System). Perhaps they might have also had an argument that system given palings, instead of ones personally crafted, interfered on the path of Ascension (level 100) and so one would ultimately lose more time breaking those palings down and building it up with your own if godhood was your goal. After all, I don’t recall ever hearing of any Majistraal Ascending and it seems to only be people from the old days doing so (before Majistraal). I could be wrong of course and some named deities may have come from the time of the Majistraal (it is old and vague history and myth after all) but it is a theory. So going by the theory that a system paling is incompatible with future growth at a certain point, Rain may be ahead of the game in terms of work he has to do to become a divine. Now since the System is artificial, it should have a core or central hardware for it to run. I have seen a theory that Awakened are used as hardware (decentralized processing) but I personally would want a physical foundation independent of humans in case the Awakened population dropped so low to crash the System. Since essence density increases as one goes deeper, it isn’t a stretch to say that the System core is in a very deep Delving (Platinum level at a minimum so over level 75, that might be one of the many reasons you weren’t considered a Majistraal until platinum as you needed to reach minimum standards to be an admin). Would be quite funny if Brightside is actually an entrance into the deepest delving that would lead to System core where a platinum could become admin.

It’d be kind of lame if she was also an arcane mysteries mage like Jamus. My hope is that either her build is somehow not Arcane mysteries based or the Warden decided to give her permission to be a rare Pure Arcane Elementalist Mage. I don’t actually think it‘a very likely and she most likely is just an Arcane Mysteries mage but a guy can hope.

HornsOfTheseus

Yeah, Rain is a wuss. Pain can be a great teacher, at least for adults. And the stabbing wasn't just for giggles, but rather to simulate a soul intent on harming you.

Cirvante

They need to find a lair, so she can get a level 5+ blue. I want to see her reaction to finally becoming an Arcane Mysteries Mage. Also, what do you think her third skill is? Intrinsic Focus or Chanting?

Cirvante

Ahah, i like the interaction of the character we get in this chapter, this is nice and pleasant to read :) The "That's horrifying" with Rain aghast and all blabla by him on it is a bit to much again here in my view Pain exist for a reason, i don't see a problem here to use it in a "good" and efficient way and logically and when its voluntary to subject to it (so why not use it?) and when in this world stabbing a bit is pretty much nothing with healing and magic around To make it a big deal directly like that and "judge" immediately on reaction without thinking on it and using his old world thingy on that when it dont/can't really apply anymore in this new world and the situation of this reality and how thing are is a bit meh here in my view I'm a bit tired to see these type of aspect of Rain come again and again and we rego on it with some focus on it each time and that we not seeing much grow of him on it Anyway, i like how it goes here, to "finnaly" get a more formal and academic education on some of the basic of this world and how it work will be very interesting to see and read in the next few chapter :)

Zarik0

The OT3 is finally canon! XD

BagFullOfLizards

Melka's story was framed as a tragedy and it had some good emotional beats. But I was never too attached to her character. Sana is adorable and I would burn the world for her.

Ziggy

Ah yes, new mechanic grinding, my favorite

jdouglas

i think you confused something there. rain got the watch accolades he returned back from vatreece.

Xaver Klein

Her being able to manually raise he level cap at Bronze seems to super unlikely. The lowest level person that there is any hint of having raised their level cap without a blue is Burrik who is currently about level 70 and was already a gold plate when it might have happened.

HornsOfTheseus

We have no evidence that she lost all her accolades. The only other thing we know that happened to her is the Warden said she would have a couple of surprises when she woke up.

HornsOfTheseus

Did she lose all her accolades though? I thought the Warden just took her Mantle.

Jac Onue

I still w8 for Velika to Wake. Her reaction to losing all of her accolades will be priceless 😖

NaPewnoKtoś

These soul techniques might be easier to learn by working backwards. Start with observing the intended effect in the Liminal Void, then link that up with how the awakened manifests/controls their soul back in SoulSpace(For Rain it would be a program build into his home base/core), then finally linking that to a mental framework/command you can use to trigger it.

Starless

meh melka was a lemming, that was going to happen regardless

MagicWafflez

Alright Sen, you already killed off poor, sweet Melka. If you kill off adorable little Sana too, we're gonna have words and a riot. Maybe not in that order.

AmethystEnd

Ooh hadn't even considered that!

Doodlyboy15

Love it, laughed out loud when tallheart played along.

Doodlyboy15

Sana is completely like a little sister you want to protect

Conor McGroarty

So I guess Sana has unofficially become the little sister of their group. When Sana isn’t teaching them Reading, Rain should have her try to enter her soul. It would be the first bronze to enter the normal way (excluding Rain popping his soul and later meditating into the middle of a bunch of chaotic unprocessed essence) in addition to seeing what may be different for her with Reading. Shouldn’t take her too long to completely refine the essence of her soul so she may be able to manually grow her level limit first (though such information would have to come from Grannybrain after Rain masters reading and moves onto next step) in theory. So feeling and seeing seem to be similar to touching and visually recording information from a book while Reading part is learning the language and interpreting it. All of it together is called Reading for short. Well Rain doesn’t seem to need sensory deprivation or drugs as he already fumbled his way to that point and just needs to compile it into a complete process (practice together). Tallheart and Ameliah likely would and it could be difficult when resistances are taken into account (like trying to get drunk but your body is too tough). Maybe Rain can use chemical ward and invert it to make the drugs more effective (or their resistance weaker as I forgot what inverting the wards did). But Rain has priority over time and energy invested to master the thing ask quick as possible so Ameliah and Tallheart can afford to take their time. Race against time (for Rain) anyway with them needing to stop at the north eastern city (Eastspar) of the DKE to repair the ship properly and take time to listen to news and stuff (how Warden and Fecht’s final showdown ends up plus the reactions of various factions like Empire, Watch, DKE, Guild, etc. my personal prediction is that Vatreece will either win or be taken down by a suicidal Fecht. Subvert expectations that Fecht was going to be a big bad Ascension has to personally deal with later by killing him off in favor of other unknown threats (and vague ones like System instability and world collapse from irresponsible power use).

Conor McGroarty

“Does our love mean so little?” One of the funniest lines in a while. Tallheart gets the best ones.

Ziggy

Reading is going to be so useful for the asshole test once Ascension learns it.

Thransk

Thanks for the chapter! 🥳
