Added 2022-08-21 05:01:00 +0000 UTCI had an extra week to write this chapter, and man, did I need it! Barely made it, if anything! I am slow!
In my defense, though, it's a long one with lots of fiddly mechanics. Also chunks.
Hope you enjoy!
Do let me know if you spot anything wonky, yeah?

2022-08-24 13:31:37 +0000 UTCWell, that one was on Ameliah. She just grabbed him and ran away, even though he already cleaned her up. And to be fair, he dropped shit on both of them, it wasn't some mean-spirited prank. I imagine he would have cleaned up the biohazard after poking it with a stick for a while. And honestly, Ameliah slipping in the stuff WAS hilarious. She's a powerful, overgeared silverplate with Airwalk, slipping and falling into conjured shit. She should have taken Quickstep before doing any aura experiments with Rain.

2022-08-24 13:29:45 +0000 UTCIf Rain ever does use Purify in this manner, he should switch the color from pure white to transparent. There was a brief mention in a previous chapter of awakened being able to customize the color their spell/ability effects manifest as. White mist is pretty dope, but I think clear, colorless mist would result in a cooler nickname once the rest of Delveland learns about the awakened who just straight up deletes everyone in a kilometer radius with absolutely zero warning.

2022-08-23 23:42:25 +0000 UTCI doubt it's going to be anyone who matters, I think the context will matter. Not like, people in general but a certain person or group. The story has gone kinda dark so far, the most dark with Ameliahs ex but the story has mostly shied noticeably away from topics like rape or extreme abuse that would be.. probably common in a medieval world with superpowered nobles and somewhat above the law adventurers. It's been kinda implied in the laws they set, and with the woman they rescued, but never in a visceral impacting the main character way. I say all this because I kinda wonder if the event will be something like that, fighting rapist slavers or something, or maybe the adamants or some other group killing an important supporting character. Maybe even eventually finding Ameliahs ex with a bunch of miscreation experiments. And rains reaction being like "You know what? You're filth. And filth deserves to be cleansed. PURIFY" I don't think the spell would harm anyone he doesn't wholeheartedly believe to be subhuman garbage. I do agree he needs to mature a little in the moral grandstanding department and I think an event like that would show in a really real way that his mindset is changing. On top of being metal as fuck

2022-08-23 21:21:12 +0000 UTCYe, I just hope it’s not Amelia or Tallheart who get cleansed, anyone one else can go for that good ol’ character development. I just hope that by the time it does happen, rains morality will have been thoroughly fleshed out, and appropriately warped by the new world. A few years of panic attacks and paranoia is perfectly understandable given his circumstances, but at this point Rain should start conceding that his previous world morality has no place in his new worlds. At least not yet

2022-08-23 21:04:49 +0000 UTCI thought that was what was gonna happen when he referred to the empire soldiers as filth before a line/chapter break during the invasion of 3 Cliffs. Also was hinted at when he purified the algae. I hope it happens in a really dramatic way.

2022-08-23 19:10:05 +0000 UTCThere’s going to come a time when Rain is in a bind, his mind is warped, trauma, or something along those lines, and he’s going to accidentally dematerialize a dozen people with purify. We don’t know how far Dozers manipulation of rains psyche really goes, and with a little bit of mental gymnastics or stress, the seemingly harmless Purify is going to be the worst thing that ever happen to mc

2022-08-23 07:20:03 +0000 UTCI wasn't really a fan of how the chapter ended either. Leaving behind a big mess for the Empire, Adventures, or local wildlife just seems disrespectful. There's no telling how toxic that substance would be if it's allowed to propagate. It'll probably disappear after a certain time, but we don't currently know how long that is.

2022-08-23 01:46:52 +0000 UTCI can absolutely imagine Rain strolling into some enemy stronghold, activating that spell, and cackling madly while proclaiming himself the King of Filth

2022-08-22 20:28:41 +0000 UTCIdk I giggled like a schoolchild here I agree partially on the Lavarro scene but in that scene's defense, I think Rain was MEANT to look that way. There was no issue with the narrative. He had ideas of fairness from his former life that simply didn't apply here and the scene was really well done in how it showcased the difference between expectation and reality
Kahandran
2022-08-22 20:26:31 +0000 UTCMaybe I'm just a stick in the mud, but I don't really see anything funny here. It actually reminds me a lot of that time Rain bitched and moaned about how Lavarro wouldn't give him the tel from monsters after he agreed to taking no cut from the mission they went on. The entire narrative warped around the action to portray Lavarro as a bad person when it was Rain just being dumb and childish. In that same way, I feel the narrative here is wrapping around him to protect him when he is being a dumb, childish asshole. Like, Ameliah was literally telling him she didn't want the thing to happen, and he did it anyway. It wouldn't be funny if she dropped him into the ocean while flying either, and then said "haha got you, I knew it wouldn't hurt you to randomly get dropped like that".

2022-08-22 09:01:38 +0000 UTC@Zed Best part of Operation Stankmage? It would force Fetch himself to deal with the submerged cities, due to his own prohibition on empowering beacons.
Starless
2022-08-22 04:26:18 +0000 UTCMy take on it was that Ameliah was visible because rain exempted her from the effect. If he hadn't exempted her, I think she likely would have been concealed in the darkness.
Forrest Minter
2022-08-21 19:50:14 +0000 UTCI’m more curious if it would cripple Lightbreakers abilities. Though can’t Shroud already do invisible murder? Also, couldn’t Rain see Ameliah just fine with the reversed aura or maybe that is only because she wasn’t being attacked?

2022-08-21 17:21:39 +0000 UTCI was thinking of reverse purify for combat use, and a situation where it would be a better choice over the damage auras when it hit me. Damage auras are subject to damage limit, resistance, armor, and HP. If we look at Rain's fight vs the Empire, it took him quite some time to eat through their shields and kill everyone. But what about reverse purify? It made Ameliah fumble, despite her likely having some chem resistance. It also forced her to leave right away. So, Rain can use it (arrow+anchor) to, basically, disorient high level enemies and/or force enemies to abandon their position, even if they have the stats to tank a damage aura. I wonder if it goes through barriers.

2022-08-21 16:14:40 +0000 UTCReverse purify is literally a biological weapon.
Philipp Gawol
2022-08-21 15:58:09 +0000 UTCThe reverse light aura actually seems like a pretty broken ability in a fight. Rain could make his allies invisible while the enemy remains visible, and then his allies could just perma-stealth murder the enemy.

2022-08-21 14:50:52 +0000 UTCIt could be even worse, depending on how much her build used to rely on her accolades. She doesn't have rings or an amulet, so no bonus stats. Let's say she's around level 54, that's 550 stat points multiplied by her gold class. It's possible that Tallheart and Halgrave are physically stronger than her now. Definitely no more supersonic speed. She basically got declawed by Vatreece. She better hope that she doesn't have any extreme stat imbalances without her accolades. Still, it's a great opportunity for some character growth for her, so I wholeheartedly approve.

2022-08-21 12:46:05 +0000 UTCThat would be true if he couldn’t control the level of occlusion but considering he can freely adjust the iff percent, these are just nice to haves. The inverse immolate/refrigerate is kinda useful as it means that he can protect his surrounding from like fireballs and meteors.
HornsOfTheseus
2022-08-21 12:35:41 +0000 UTCBoth those examples seem pointless and spiteful actions by the Warden. The information she gave Amelia, while causing Amelia grief, is at least something Amelia can maybe use in the future. If Vatreece told Halgrave anything, I guess it had something to do with the event that caused him to retire from adventuring to govern Fel Sadanis. Maybe something from Lavarro's memories?

2022-08-21 11:57:03 +0000 UTCI think the spell is badly designed. Each one of the effect counter themself. Occlusion of a spell that doesn't make the intented effect. Exemple: You can't clean someone without cleaning the area. It's a regression.

2022-08-21 08:39:12 +0000 UTCMagically summoned matter (constructs) is temporary (like Mahria’s ice wall) so unlikely to put in such effort to make them last so long as a prank. Vatreece is a platinum Mentalist and made mental constructs in rain’s mind but they are temporary all the same even if they last for months. Hard to pull off such a large scale and noticeable “prank” when it would require days of work in addition to high level, soul mastery and spell matrixes. Granted that the noticeable part can be taken care of if it is high enough up (like what those Citizens did when trying to fight Lightbreaker outside Fel Sadanis barrier) but still requires a disproportionate amount of effort to payoff. Theoretically possible (make a frozen shit meteor) at least if you really wanted to I suppose (though Dozer has to be kept ignorant of it).
Conor McGroarty
2022-08-21 08:13:26 +0000 UTCI wonder if the Warden told Halgrave any secret about his dad (the rogue of the Rousers adventurer group)? Like maybe how most of the Rousers are dead due to them having planned something nasty and the Warden took care of them out of public eye? Did Burrick not discover soul manipulation (thus manually increasing cap) by himself but ratted them out before they committed an atrocity and kept their reputation intact while being rewarded by Warden with that knowledge? Or perhaps Vatreece informed Halgrave of using Lavarro as a human meat puppet as punishment for crimes? Either way, understandable why Halgrave wishes to be left alone for now.
Conor McGroarty
2022-08-21 08:03:35 +0000 UTCI believe the Warden gimped her abilities so she is essentially like an ordinary person now (except maybe durability as they still had to use an adamant needle). Meaning that she likely can’t use her skills, strength and speed beyond an ordinary person and magic assuming she has anything that uses mana (which would fall under skills anyway so whatever). Warden has a pretty good understanding of Velika so crushing her pride by robbing (or hiding them in her soul but I don’t doubt Warden can’t steal accolades as she removed the Mantle that binds with the soul too) accolades (inherited power like the blue blood noble she is) and making her essentially an ordinary person except for durability/health (her only combat use would be as a meat shield) certainly will make it easier for Rain and friends to rehabilitate her into a better person.
Conor McGroarty
2022-08-21 07:57:47 +0000 UTCAnyone else notice that apparently Velika no longer has her many accolades? That's a hell of a blow.

2022-08-21 07:47:04 +0000 UTCHere I was thinking that Rain would have unintentionally broken the damage limit with the constant tests but instead found out what reverse purify does like that (a disgusting but effective tactic whether for disrupting an army or individual combat but must remember to keep it secret from Dozer). Well ethereal aura is leveled but heat ward needs the same. Imagine if Rain had Ameliah airwalk him to essentially drop concentrated sewage on an army? I initially thought dozer forgive me was in reference for ignoring the double negative so long but it was actually due to initiating a literal shitstorm. Nice to expand Dozer’s emotional range but at what cost?
