This one took some doing, let me tell you. Break out your slide rules, everybody.

So… wait… let me know if I have this right. It’s been a while since I read, so forgive me if this was explained recently. I can’t remember what Rain’s strength tolerance is, but using the table at the beginning, with his synchro being 3.9, and assuming the extra 40 from his total strength comes from the ring (10 base + 40 accolade + 40 magic item), his tolerance has to be greater than or equal to 40, right? For his effective strength to come out at 7.02. Oh! That must be the MISC column. 40 points of strength from the ring out of a total of 40 allowed by his tolerance. Do I have this right?

Rebecca

I think it would be better for the readers if you would actually multiply out the quantities and simplify. The formula then becomes $\min(B+A+\min(M,T), S + (S/(B+A)) * \min(M,T))$. In other words if you write the effective buff from itemsi.e. $\min(M,T)$ as $G$ and the synchronization factor $S/(B+A)$ as $p$ then, your formula as long as $S \leq B+A$ is $S + pG$. Thus adding accolades or overleveling decreases $p$ while keeping S and G constant. But if you are going the Rain who is terrible at explaining math, then this is fine as you have explained. But maybe that makes it harder for readers to follow.

Attribute Accolades do not cause soulstrain. They are almost exactly equivalent to putting more stat points into the attribute, and that does not cause soulstrain. It just means you need to train to adjust (synchronize) to the increased attribute. Boosting an attribute with a ring does cause soulstrain if you boost too far past your tolerance. That has nothing to do with Accolades. The fact that boosting with a ring by 20 past the tolerance does not cause serious soulstrain explains why most of the rings people have only include a +10 (or possibly more expensive ones +20) to an attribute. That amount is generally safe. Unlike a ring that boosted +100, which would immediately result in serious soulstrain unless someone had previously trained up their tolerance to amazingly high values.

I’m not sure I understand how leveling with both gear boosts and accolades causes overleveling soulstrain. If I understand it correctly, when calculating effective stats, accolades reduce the synch factor while increasing the gear factor. How does that cause soulstrain?

It looks like training with the strength accolades is like strapping wrist and ankle weights on so that when you take them off you will feel stronger, except with the accolades you will actually be a lot stronger. Once Rain gets his strength sync points S past about 22 he should be able to use one of the strength accolades to improve his effective strength, and the gap for the next should decrease slightly after the first one.

The weapon trees could potentially be problematic for a speed focused build. I'm worried the skill 'autopilot' might force people to perform the skill at the base speed it was designed with, rather than the person's maximum speed. I'm also really interested in seeing how powerful the buffs in this world are. Skills like Body Strengthening, Mana Striking, Alacrity, Concussive Blows and Efficent Movement would be really powerful on monolithic builds since it would allow them to compensate for weaknesses.

Starless

Well, a Dustrio with most of their bonus stat points in Strength and with Strength of Arm would be pretty strong as well. Add to that near limitless energy to do 6 hours of strength training per day. You just need enough force resistance to avoid muscle damage. Specialize in Physical Passives, Physical Utility and whatever tree Alacrity is in. Add one or two weapon trees and maybe even Stealth (Soften Steps should be in there). They would even be able to handle Velocity at high intensity just like the Razorspine.

Cirvante

It looks like Strength + vigor governs how effectively you can move at extreme speeds. With the +speedstat as a flat multiplier to the physical(Strength) portion while +speedsync is a flat multiplier to the mental(vigor) portion of the equation. At least, that's what i'm getting from all this. With the +2 speed equipped, Rain moved 20% faster, but didn't think 20% faster.

Starless

I like the new explanation for synchro. It just makes no sense for someone to raise their synchro to 100% as a dull and then awaken to instantly become a super warrior with hundreds of points of effective strength. Having to constantly sync up again as you raise your Strength makes more sense. We still need a better understanding of speed though. So far it seemed to be dependant on Strength with Vigour contributing coordination and reflexes. Would a +10 speed accolade simply double that base after synchronization?

Cirvante

You’re describing a story that I would quickly lose interest in.

Hmm..... i wonder if a mundane/natural source of heat or cold could affect his armor...... i mean, the armor can absorb the magic attacks because they are made out of mana, so i wonder what would happen if he fell into lava or someone threw a Molotov cocktail at him. Because if that can be converted to mana, that would be too OP, essentially they could use a natural source like a volcano to generate infinite amounts of mana. Btw, Rain's equipment is quite unimaginative so far....... come on, he could have made some modern gadgets like harpoon gun or normal gun, tripwires and many other things that should have been quite easy to make for an OP magic blacksmith like Tallheart. The things he has so far are just like any other native person would have, but he should have had some better ideas, as he must have seen quite a few good ideas on Earth........ and he can remember almost every detail thanks to clarity. It is a little disappointing that he already made electricity available and even aluminium, but he did not think about making anything for the most dangerous adventure he will have since arriving in this world. A real shame........ i really hope it will happen soon tho. Still, thanks for the chapter!

I_love_magic

Just wanna say, since I don't think it gets said enough. I've really enjoyed the story so far, and I look forward to each of the update drops. I know lots of people have all sorts of ideas on how they'd like to run the story into the ground, but as someone who has put out a serialized story for a few hundred thousand words a few years back, I think you're doing a damn fine job.

Alec

Looks like there is a temporal difference between rains world and ours. For him it may be a day, for us its a week... ^_^

D

Tomrrow tomorrow.. you're only a (week) away!

Chopper

I think it's more nuanced than that. Rain is implying that there is both a "natural" sync percentage and your actual sync percentage (S%), plus your flat sync points (SP).? For instance, say I have a current Str of 10 and I given my slovenly life, my natural sync percentage is 50%. Thus with no changes, I'm only effectively a 5 (S% of 50%, SP = 5). According to Rain if I level and add 10 pts to Str (Base of 20), because my SP is 5, I won't feel any stronger, resulting in an S% of 25%. However (and this is the power leveling advantage) the system will jump up my SP quickly to return me to my natural S% of 50%, “grow into my stats”. My SP will easily go up to 10. With the accolades, I can use this to cheat. Maintaining my natural sync percentage of 50%, 5 SP and base 10 Str, if I add 40 Str in accolades, my S% will drop to 10%. The system then will power me up to get my SP to 25 to return my S% to 50%. Then, if I remove the accolades, because my SP is now 25, my S% will be 100% on my base stats. Given the implication of a “natural” S%, I wonder if without training, the SP will drop over time to return the S% to it’s natural level. That is, if Rain goes a long time without the Str accolades, he will lose the exploited gains.?

Welkin2

Imagine taking five years to reach max level. #buffjack2021

Starless

fact Check. "I told him about how I leveled twice in one day." Rain Leveled 3 times in one day, Which would have been more memorable

His Dad

Sure, in OUR world. But a world where metals have intrinsic runes? Maybe not so much.

Sanairb

Being able to make an Aluminum filter is a lot more important than they understand; Aluminum's value isn't just in its Magical or Combat powers, its arguable one of the most important metals in our world. I'm sure Tallheart at least will come to understand that soon enough, but still.

Osamaru Ta

I'm convinced that aluminum is mental aligned specifically to enable that foil hat joke.

Pyrefiend

Thank you for the wonderful chapter.

Fabhar

Thank you!

Andrew

I wonder if Tallheart can work carbon and make graphene or carbon nanotubes. I imagine they would have insane force and arcane resist.

Joshua Little

Algebra, the great cheat.

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter. Finally time to delve.

Joshua Little

Dang, I love Tallhearts personality. Hope he can warm up to the rest of the company enough for them to see his fun side. That man is golden.

Tycho Green

Ratioed?

Tycho Green

The accolade grinding trick is pretty handy, but I’m honestly more excited about the aluminum. I don’t know what’s planned for that material, but I’m hoping that Rain remembers Aluminum Oxynitride (ALON) and gets Tallheart to try making aluminum glass for the eyeholes in his helmet.

Judah Frankel

Finally he got his isekai cheat ability

Enkelados

while the last chapter kind of felt like a filler this one satisfies my inner nerd

jaeger972

Thanks for the chapter. This is the most I've looked forward to the next chapter in a couple months. Finally, the DELVE!!!

(Not so) Idle TheoryCrafter

“Just try to work out what it means? Please?” -> no way in hell XD

Thenais

Man, this one has everything! Math, discoveries, action, character skill progression! Even plot progression!

Eric Hartz

That chapter was awesome. One for the record books

Christopher Roberts

I’d rather keep the smut separate from the thought provoking stories. Somehow mixing them ruins them both.

Andrew

HUZZAH! CANT WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK!

Tim Johnson

So the lower the sync percentage the better the growth and with accolades boosting a stat you get artificial lowering. It sounds like the cheese will only be effective for low level stats due to needing bigger boosts the higher you go. Unless my understanding is completely off.

CHAPTER TOMORROW PLEASE

OrangeBasket

I am disappointed at the amount of fornication in this chapter. I had high hopes after the last month did not include this same level of unchasity.

This was great. Let’s LEVEL!
