Trauma and sexuality: Avery was brutally assaulted by an adult when he was 13 years old resulted a obsession to prove his masculinity. Avery uses sex as a coping mechanism to subconsciously “get his power back” often by recreating and his trauma with his partners* (see below). Sex will temporarily relives Avery’s feelings of insecurity related with his trauma, but quickly returns urging him to find a new partner.
Avery’s addiction is fueled by his low-self esteem and shame associated with his trauma and sexuality.
Avery created a "masculine" persona for himself and only allowed himself to go out with men who were physically weaker, shorter and at least some-what feminine despite being attracted to masculine men. This is due to the fear of being taken advantage of as well as insecurity about his own image.
Childhood: Avery was considered the “problem child” by both of his parents and struggled to keep up with his class due to his learning disabilities, ADHD and dyslexia. Besides his academic struggles, Avery also started getting into fights at school in the 8th grade and continued throughout his highschool years. One of these fights would result in Avery being held back his sophomore year.
Avery was often bullied for his heavy accent and appearance: having long greasy hair, crooked teeth (eventually braces) and wearing worn out clothes. The other students teased Avery with nicknames, the most popular being “Trailer park”. Despite the ill-intentions, Avery was not offended by the name calling and embraced the insults. Benny still calls Avery Trailerpark today
Relationship with Archer: Avery considers Archer to be his boyfriend. This technically makes Archer Avery’s first emotionally intimate relationship. Avery and Archer are two considerably different people that work surprisingly well together.
Avery is not easily grossed out by Archer’s blink behaviors. (Years of gutting deer, birthing calves and cleaning horse stalls has desensitized him)
Avery also needs someone to talk to and Archer is a good listener. He could spend all day talking his ears off and Archer won't mind a bit.
**Avery exclusively "tops" because he associates "bottoming" with his assault and thinks its emasculating. Avery believes a false-notion that he can “even-out” or restore what was taken from him by topping as many men as possible. Before Archer, sex was pretty much Avery's only outlet. He never allowed himself to get emotionally intimate with his partners and only used them for his own gain.
As a child, Avery already questioned his masculinity simply because he was familar with the sterotypes typically associated with gay men...and because of his father continously reinforced Avery’s insecurities by making him feel pathetic for crying, weak for being clingy with his mother and was continously being compared to his older brother, whom he clearly favored.
